Overwatch is one of the games my boyfriend played, and I was just watching him. Originally, he had only a PS4 version, and he was always furious and yelling. I can understand all that anger in competitive mode, but he was mad even when playing quick play. At least three times he was so furious that he uninstalled the game to reinstall it a few months later. Yeah, my boyfriend is one of the best players in the world, and the others suck.
That was one of the reasons why I didn't want to play the game because I take all the hates personally. The other thing was that I'm not able to play shooters with a controller. So my only experience was when my boyfriend had to leave for a while, and the game was still running. For a few minutes I tried to play it, and then I was free.
But then my boyfriend got a new laptop at work and started to buy games like crazy. He found out that there was a discount on Overwatch. Buy or not to buy? That's the question!
Well, my skill on PC should be definitely better than on PS4, so I bought the game too, and we started to play it.
Overwatch
It is a multiplayer first-person shooter game you play with your friends or strangers and noobs (like me) against a similarly composed team of opponents.
Gameplay
In quick play, your goal is to take over an objective or prevent the enemy team to take it over (pushing the payload or taking over some place). There is a time limit. If you take over that objective in time, your team wins, if not, you lose. There can be also overtime, which can turn the whole game upside down. This will happen when the time limit expired, but both sides are still fighting to get that objective. At that time there must be at least one player from each team.
There are plenty of characters you can play. All you need to do is know what your character can do, mouse, WASD, and E, Q and Shift keys.
Q is an ultimate, which is gradually charging from the beginning of the game, and once it reaches 100%, you can use it. E is usually some stronger special skill or attack, Shift mostly serves as a buff, or switching character modes and the basic attack/heal is controlled by the mouse.
It sounds quite easy, but each character is different and can do something else, and one can't possibly know how to play all of them. Mostly, you'll be playing just a few of them all the time, and the others will cry in the corner. If you want to try out other characters, you can either try a tutorial or play Mystery Heroes within Arcade.
This game combines classic quick play with the fact that your character is drawn by random and switched after each death. It's incredible fun, even if you often tear your hair that your team (and you) is totally useless. Well, of course, it'll be useless, if most of the players don't know their character, and no one in the team will get a tank while the other team is filled with them.
Such a game leads to some fun moments:
Receding into the unknown
Elimination by some guy with a ridiculous nick
Wow, my gifs are awesome, I should create some compilation videos!
Characters
There is a lot of character to choose from, and sometimes some new is released. They belong to four categories:
- Offense (lower health and more significant damage)
- Defense (defending objective in the back line)
- Tank (protect teammates from damage)
- Support (healers mostly with some buffs and debuffs)
I started out as D.Va (tank) but then I started to hate the game because we never won, my boyfriend was yelling at me, and I was angry all the time. I didn't want to play the game, and my attitude changed only after testing my first support - Mercy. I couldn't fly properly between teammates, and I was dead after a single shot, but I didn't care because as a healer you just heal and the rest is on the others. Then I tried Zenyatta and fell in love with him because as a healer he is also quite good in combat.
And I like when a near-dead teammate came to you and then says thank you for healing. I feel finally appreciated, and it is one of the most beautiful moments in the game.
Let's open some Shit Loot Box
For each new level and events in the game, you get loot boxes. You can get from them various accessories to the characters like skins, sprays, emotions, etc. Just totally useless stuff without which you can live, but once you're not able to get the loot box you will be mad. And of course, you won't loot some stuff for your main. Instead, you'll find the legendary skin for Reaper that you don't play. Or you see the yellow pedestal, you're looking forward to that legendary skin and you get the money instead. Yes, money, because from all the legendary skins you got the one you already have. I applaud.
I don't play Reaper means legendary skin
Zenyatta, my actual main means no skin
Summary
If you are looking for some great game to play with your friends, get Overwatch because you will surely have a lot of fun. You can laugh together at some ridiculous nicks of other players, your mad noob skill, the inventing of new entertainment nicknames and cover names for individual characters, or the shits that have fallen from your loot box. All you have to do is to keep your rage in competitive and not to bother with every bad move of your teammate because it just spoils the game to you and the players in your neighborhood.
That shot with the bow :D
Yeah, I'm a sniper! :D
I've never been much a person to play FPS, and I think I'm getting less and less.
I do not really like to get into the competition of today, I liked it better when it was Quake and Unreal Tournament games. But I understand why they like Overwatch so much and why they consider it one of the best online of this decade. And I hope you have great success in the future of esports! :)
I didn't even like FPS because I suck at them. I didn't play a lot of them, but I like Overwatch because it is such a crazy game :) It is fun to play it not counting all the hilarious compilations on Youtube. But I will have to wait for at least a few levels to play competitive.
At least you're enjoying the game in the best way! I'm happy about it :) I support any kind of gamer who really plays for fun! : D
I used to love this game and occasionally still play, but honestly the game modes in competitive just take too long for me. That's the same reason I quit league of legends even though I was grandmaster. Great review tho! Summed up the game I know very well :)
Thanks a lot! I don't have the level and skill yet, so competitive is not bothering me. But I like to play some challenging (and longer) games because I can practice my skill more than when the game ends instantly.
My boyfriend forced me to play LoL, and I quit it after a few hours because of the community. I can't stand if someone is abusing me especially when I'm the best player of the team. I want to play for fun and not to sweat and be angry. Even though I also become the rage monster, when I play with some ultra retards :D
