A bit of your story
To talk about the model GO of the PSP, which for me is almost a separate console we have to first talk about the first PSP since that is where everything we compare will come from .
The Playstation Portable or PSP is the first portable console developed by the well-known Sony Computer Entertainment, or only Sony for friends, a multinational company of Japanese origin recognized among many things for having developed the classic Playstation and Playstation 2 two consoles that have revolutionized the video game industry completely. The PSP was launched on the market on December 12, 2004 in Japan, and after some time it was released to the market in the rest of the world, it quickly became one of the best-selling gadgets, small and powerful of the world at that time. And it was sold as '' A playstation 2 that you can carry in your pocket '' and well we know well Hype that caused the masses considering that the Playstation 2 is the most sold console in the world.
It had a great catalog of games, excellent graphics and a great power that seemed over human compared to its only direct competitor the DS of Nintendo. And they did not lie when they said it was a portable PS2, it had a power so big that only one console with the pseudonym ''Playstation'' could have. Eye all this I say without encouragement to detract from the potential of what was the Nintendo Ds since each console was literally a universe.
It had many more functions in addition to clearly the ability to play, it had the ability to play several multimedia formats, such as the MP4 video, listen music while playing, MP3 function , movies playback, photos viewer, integrated microphone, USB 2.0, wireless connections, Internet connection. He also had a great online quite solid that must be highlighted; since I would even risk saying that it was more solid than that of the same PS2. It was the perfect console to take you to play on any side because its battery lasted a few hours was comfortable to hold and had a screen with very good lighting, but was not perfect because the first versions that came out and had space in them to introduce content, being almost mandatory to have to buy a memory card M2 whose price used to be not very accessible.
As is usually the case in successful electronic products, companies usually take re-editions designed to solve some problems, defects or errors that the first editions had and that were not foreseen. Although also in other cases it was done to reduce production costs or to adapt said apparatus to a specific public, or simply to improve the product; in any of these cases, re-editions usually occur and it is quite common.
Although in this post we will talk particularly about one, its 3rd re-issue the PSP GO.
The PSP GO
The PlayStation Portable Go (PSP Go) as I said ending the previous point is the third reissue of the PSP and went on the market 1 of November of the 2009.
This reissue, unlike previous ones that only sought to improve or compact a bit what was the original PSP, without altering too much or modifying its characteristic design, this reedition opted for an almost total change in most aspects, including in the interface, adding and removing many things that I will mention soon.
The main reason why this PSP is so distinctive and different from the others is that the use of the UMD (Universal Media Disc) format that was normally used since the first one was completely eliminated PSP As the official format of the game disc, this obviously limited the user to only be able to acquire the games only in digital form. With what intention? In principle to reduce the size of the PSP and reduce its weight to 43% that is not little, and makes it much more portable. This action is compensated with an internal memory of 16 GB that truly allows you to store inside a lot of things such as games, movies or a lot of music.
Also among other features of this console that did not have any other was the power '' pause the games '' With this option, it was allowed to create a point of restoration at any time of the game, which you can resume in any time and once the game is resumed, the restoration point disappears. And believe me when I say that this function is ideal for very long games with save points very far away.
design
As for its design, the PSP GO turns out to be quite more comfortable and transportable than its previous editions, and this is due entirely to its great design that initially caused quite controversial with its very small size compared to the imposing which were the previous PSP but ended up being one of its very great virtues, because the size was perfect child or people with hands not so big thing that the first PSP I do not take into consideration. Although something important to say is that if you came to play with any of the previous editions of PSP it will be somewhat complicated to adapt to this.
But do not be scared because once you adapt the game experience is sublime I assure you. Its buttons are very comfortable and are positioned in a way that everything is very close for games Fight, RPGs, Shooters and Shoot 'em up. At the same time it could be tiresome to play games that involved a great movement, use or precision of the Stick, because being so small and having so close the crosshairs could become very turbid in games of Racing for example.
Problems
The big main problem that this console has is the same as what makes it different from the other editions of the PSP, and that is that removing the reader UMD and limiting a console to only having digital games kills many years and years of tradition in video games, and is that as an idea is good because it is always good to have alternatives and it is very clever to adapt the products to various situations that can happen to users, for example, they do not have the time or the desire to go out and buy games in a store, or think that physical games can make a console less portable; this knowing that the PSP games were quite bigger than the competition and carrying several ones on top could be uncomfortable, not to mention that some PSP models used to have disk reader failures when the console It was in motion which killed a little the magic of playing or that even directly failed the reader because as any electronic device has a life time.
In any of those cases mentioned above, it is still not well justified to remove the reader as an alternative method to adapt and expand to certain users because all editions of PSP had the possibility to acquire games digitally through of the Playstation Store was therefore not exclusive to the PSP GO, which makes such a console feature merely a possible excuse for Sony to reduce costs and increase sales digital knowing that this was their worst market. And not at all because the console had a sale price of almost 250 $ without games included, although at least luckily later it was decided to lower the official price to 180$ with 10 games included, but this last offer was very limited and exclusive Spain.
The digital market is not always a bad option, it has its pros and contras as anything, sometimes it's even more profitable to buy the game digitally than physically, at least at the moment it's like that, but There are several problems that arise at the mercy of this market one of the biggest problems with this and often happens both in the Playstation Store and in other companies such as Steam, Nintendo and even Microsoft. And is that when you buy the game digitally you are only buying the license to play it, but the game is not yours therefore does not belong to you, and actions such as resell or lend are totally prohibited by the rules of These platforms, and making them run some risk that the same game that you bought and paid for may be revoked.
Another problem that part of what I have just commented is that having a console completely limited to the digital market completely kills what is the second hand market or used games, therefore it is impossible to be able buy used games at a much lower price than a new store. In the case of the PSP GO and the Playstation Store in its heyday you could watch the games at an average price of 35$ and 40$ dollars that was not small amount, the same game used you could get it around 5$ to 10 $ and new physical for about 20$ in almost any store which was even absurd, How could it be possible you more expensive to buy digital game than physical? Well, these situations were repeated a lot since at that time Sony did not fit very well their prices did not give great deals like now.
The console was not perfect in its design, despite being very attractive and having a screen that moved up and down all PSP GO tend to have the same destination, and the screen was connected to the other components through very thin flex of dubious quality that was wearing out as you closed and opened the console. Total that in the end the most probable thing is that although you take care of it a lot you suffer the great problems of all the users is that the flex is damaged and you can not witness anything that appears on the screen. Although nothing that can not be fixed with 10 $ an ebay account, patience, a good tutorial on Youtube and good skill with the screwdriver.
Not everything is so bad
Despite all the bad things that have been mentioned throughout this analysis that make you see the PSP GO as something that should not be looked at, the truth is that under so many things not so well implemented there is a jewel of console.
There were rumors that maybe the PSP GO would have less power than its predecessor editions, things that they said due to their small size but in the end they ended up being just that gossip since the PSP GO has the same power or even more than the PSP 3000 which according to many is the best edition of the PSP. Merit that is no small because being fully digital the reading of their games makes it even faster in their load times which means that there are almost no time lapses between loading one screen and the other in games which affected a lot to the gaming experience in games with a lot of content in the UMD.
In addition to its large 16 GB of internal memory that were a barbarity in its launch date, it might seem little compared to currently that many of the consoles have that series, but certainly at the time was one of the presumable things, also counted on the possibility of expanding his memory which was another option that increased the experience, although that memory became somewhat expensive.
The PSP GO currently as any model of PSP is pirateable, and I assure you that it is ambrosial to have it in that state because you can play all the games in the PSP catalog no hassle, also emulate an insane amount of old consoles such as the Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo, Game Boy, Gameboy Advance, MasterSystem , Megadrive, Amiga, Turbografx, MAME, NeoGeo and even layers to emulate their main commercial rival the Nintendo DS and even the same PS1 which is a great merit and demonstrates the great power of the PSP SONY. Also with the 16 Gb series that has the console will be able to download without problems all the catalog of games of the consoles previously named what would give hours and hours of games.
Do not openly approve of the emulation or the piracy, although I do not punish or judge the one who does it and even came justify in certain cases, but you have to be responsible.
¿Is it worth having this console now?
