Video gaming might not be the oldest art form, but it’s without a doubt one of my favourites, and despite this relatively short time the medium has been around, we have seen a number of greats to grace this planet in the past. Much like art, we have had games that were revolutionary for their time, and which have impacted the gaming market seen today. We have also had numerous failures from which we have learned from, and moved on to make masterpieces.
I’m more of a gameplay and story focused gamer. By this I mean that if a game is fun to play, and/or is well told and interesting, then I’m bound to have a good time. In this way, I love to play classic games.
Old, potentially outdated graphics don’t bother me at all as long as a game is enjoyable to some extent. Even now in 2017, having seen extraordinary technological leaps in how games play and look, I enjoy going back to old favourites, in fact I would even go so far to say that I enjoy them more as I now know what makes games fun for me.
As I mentioned previously, this is mainly because playing games made 20 or so years ago doesn’t mean I need to sacrifice any quality of the experience. Loading up Pokémon Red on my old Gameboy Advance still fills me with joy, as does loading up a ROM of Crash Bandicoot 2. These are games that I have incredible memories playing in the past, and replaying them in this age of gaming doesn’t taint or reduce my satisfaction in any way.
Games (in general) age very well, similar to movies. A game that was awesome when it was released is still the same game decades later. In this way, nostalgia can’t be the only thing that makes these games fun to play after so long. The first time I played Final Fantasy VII was 15 years after it had been released, and I absolutely loved it from start to finish. As another example, Zelda: Ocarina of Time, one of the greatest games ever made, I didn’t have the chance to play until 2011, 13 years since its release. Again, a timeless classic, everything about it was on point, and it makes me wonder how many fantastic games I have yet to play simply because it was before my time, or I didn’t have the opportunity to get into it when it was still new.
This is where remakes or remasters tend to come to rescue. For me they are a means to experience classic games that I didn’t get to play at the time of their release (or if I lost a classic game that I loved, I’m sure it’s happened to all of us). Take Halo: Combat Evolved for example, I am a big-time Halo fan, but the first Halo game I ever played was Halo 3. I never got to play through the first one, the one that started it all, or better known as the one with the super-powered pistol. Getting to play through the remastered version having missed out on the original was amazing, and if it wasn’t for the remaster I may have never touched the first Halo game.
Needless to say, gaming has changed a lot since the days of Final Fantasy VII and Pokémon Red. Most obviously in graphics, which have drastically improved, but that’s not what concerns me. I am constantly impressed with how creative and inventive creators can be, forging new and unique experiences for everyone to enjoy. It is the way that gaming evolves and expands as both an art form and a mode of entertainment. Learning from past failures and successes, as well as the near infinite creative drive and passion has led to a generation where there is such a huge range of amazing games, of so many different types, offering experiences unique and engaging in their own ways, to suit each and every person. I think it’s beautiful, and I can’t wait to see the direction that it takes next.
These are just my thoughts though, and I am just one person, I would love to know your thoughts. What games really struck home for you? And how do you think they have aged with the times? Let me know in the comments, and if you enjoyed this post, be sure to give it a like. Until next time, stay beautiful 🙂
Maaan Pokémon red and blue are gold even tho im a newer generation i got around to playing them, what can i say i love old games im retro.
Btw i'd recommend randowhaling this post.
Cheers.
Thanks mate :D Yeah definitely dude Pokémon was my childhood from the age of 5, from Gameboy Black & White, though Advance, SP, DS. I played Pokémon, Pokémon Silver, Pokémon Saphire & Emerald, then Pokémon Diamond, and then all the rest. Suffice to say I've played them all, but I have to be honest, the games from Diamond and older were my favorite, because they were a lot simpler and more about the actual Pokemon rather than the graphics and the side-things.
Yea i played all the pokemon games except the 3ds ones i must say i grow uo on them. Oh boy dont i like playing them again
Hell yeah! They're it's so much fun to go back and play them again, I just played through Diamond again last year
Hahah nice man i thank you for sharing it with me. Pokémon will always have a place in my heart. As it will on many other players. Cheers!
This is why I am such a big fan of Nintendo. They understand that a truly great game does not need amazing graphics, just pure unforgettable gameplay.
If you like remastered you should look at the 3D games released on the 3ds. Only a few weeks ago I finished sonic again and still loved it.
Definitely man! I have actually played a lot of the 3DS remastered games and they are incredible and so nostalgic. Nintendo is pretty great although I feel the switch is a bit gimmicky nevertheless their games are incredible! 😀
:O you can't think that about the switch!! :-) I get why people think that but I'm still not over the fact I finished the latest zelda in all its glory whilst on the train.
I just hope they keep up the remasters on it as there's some great one out already. Plus they add coop multiplayer on them too.
I just wish the Switch was more like their other consoles and didn't try to be this big 'grandiose' thing, I mean the console is good, the games are good, it's just their whole marketing and the surrounding. Don't get me wrong I love Nintendo games and I love the DS(s) but I'm not sure I would buy the switch, Unless a friend also wanted to play it as well.
Oh yeah definitely, I'm all about the Nintendo remasters man, especially when they have Co-op!
Congratulations @locikll!
Your post was mentioned in my hit parade in the following category:
as more and more games are made I think we will need better and better ways of sorting through them to find the gems so that it doesn't become so much about marketing and can instead be more about the core design
Exactly! But not just this, As I have mentioned in: https://steemit.com/gaming/@locikll/why-platform-exclusive-games-need-to-stop-being-a-thing, We need to get much better as gamers at slowing down, not purchasing those 'Pre-Orders' and actually trying demos or watching youtubers play it, before we buy! We've fallen into this, 'its easy to buy so click that buy and hope it'll be good' then be disappointed when it doesn't live up to the high expectations, and has day-one DLC.
Great article mate! I'm glad to see you thriving here on Steem :)
Thank you very much man! I really appreciate it :D, people like you make me glad to be here!
Well my favorite games are Elder Scrolls (all of them ) , Fallout (all of them ) and many more . Problem in nowadays is that there are many people who doesn't look for the story but the graphics and I think that this can be a problem in the near future because game developers( not all of them ) won' focus anymore on making good storylines but graphics and that will be the thing that will ruin some long running games .
I really couldn't agree more! I think it's already happening now, I mean the triple A titles are all about graphics and 70% of them are terrible, however the indie games are the shiners usually with mediocre graphics but amazing story telling and smooth gameplay
Nice article. Final Fantasy VII was one of my first huge gaming experiences too, and while I do like a lot of the newer era of games, I sometimes long for the same style as that older RPG.
Awesome! Final Fantasy VII was one of the hall marks of my childhood, I think it has an irreplaceable and I long await it's remake!
we think about games the same way. Its funny because growing up I mostly played older games since I could not afford to but new games. I got an n64 like 10 years after it came out, and when I got to play donkey kong 64 I loved it. As I got older I noticed I kept that habbit of playing older games even tho I could afford more newer games. I just love going back and experiencing every great game. that's why I even called myself the gaming archive as a sort of archiving of my experiences.
That's pretty awesome! Haha and now I know where you got your name from :P. Donkey Kong and Supermario 64 were the best!
I wish they would make a new donkey kong like DK64
Yeah definitely! Same goes for all the classics, I know they're remaking Final Fantasy VII which is awesome
That is one that I have yet to play. I got it for the ps3 but just have not got around to play it. lol now I buy cheap games just to add them to my collection for when I have a chance to play them
Not a bad way to do it, and it's quite an awesome game you should give it a go! :)
Man I love ur taste for games. I just started playing ffVII on my iPad. It's amazing to see people here are still quoting ffxvii :). Thanks.
Thanks mate! Ooh Nice that's pretty awesome, well have fun its an amazing game!
