ASSASSIN'S CREED ODYSSEY Official TEASER Trailer (E3 2018)
If you were paying attention to leaks before E3 2018 started, you already knew there was a new Assassin's Creed game on the way -- one big enough that Ubisoft had to reveal the game's full name, Assassin's Creed Odyssey, early. We knew it was set in Ancient Greece. We knew it was coming this year. Now, we have a trailer and some significant gameplay details for the game.
Set in 431 BC, Odyssey follows the exploits of one of two playable characters, Kassandra and Alexios, through the events of the Peloponnesian War. Once you choose one character, that will be it for the rest of the game, so no character switching like we saw in Assassin's Creed Syndicate. Either of the characters possesses the Spear of Leonidas, which will play a major role in gameplay and in the story. And building on the RPG mechanics introduced in last year's Assassin's Creed: Origins, Odyssey will have dialog options, equipment, skill trees and the promise of player choice affecting the world as a whole. And like Origins, a brief tease within the gameplay trailer above hints at some supernatural elements making their way into the game as a minotaur made the quickest of appearances.
Assassin's Creed Odyssey will take place before any other game in the timeline as players find themselves in Ancient Greece. You will assume the role of a Spartan outcast-turned-mercenary named Alexios or Kassandra, depending on which character you choose. Your Spartan will make a name for themselves during the Peloponnesian War.
Assassin's Creed is slowly becoming more and more of a full-blown RPG, and Odyssey is the second step in that process. Ubisoft has stated that with this entry, they aim to put player choice at the forefront in terms of the game's narrative. In addition to the usual siege and murder missions to complete the plot. Players will be making story-altering decisions that include forging or rejecting alliances, and even pursuing romance.
In terms of exploration, you will be traversing the large open world of Ancient Greece. Nearly half of the open world is water, but it also contains cities, beaches, mountains, and forests. Since there is so much water, though, naval combat will be making a return, complete with ship customisation and crew member recruitment.
During your travels you will be assisted by a First Civilisation artefact known as the Spear of Leonidas. The spear will grant you various skills and supernatural abilities. On top of this, other weapons can also be used, along with customisable breastplates, helmets, greaves, belts, and bracers that change your appearance and stats. Some of the gameplay elements mentioned above, along with a few more, are outlined in the developer commentary video below.
