Welcome to my review of Iconoclasts!

The short review, for people that are not into reading:
Awesome gameplay, beautiful art, catchy soundtrack, interesting story and lore, and even some genuinely funny writing.. this game has it all!

And now for the review!

What is Iconoclasts?

In a lot of ways, this game is a Metroidvania. 2D exploration, that will need to be revisited with the proper upgrades, etc. It's also a little more 'driven' than some other titles in the genre, as the story will often take you on a ride for a while to get you through important events, and then leave you free to explore your surroundings and advance at your own pace again for a while.
This game allows you to equip up to 3 'tweaks' at a time, but in order to get these, you'll need to find the blueprints and materials, which are often hidden in boxes in out-of-the-way areas, sometimes requiring some platforming or light/medium environmental puzzling to reach. No grinding for materials by killing enemies, as all of them are found via exploration. The more you explore, the more types of tweaks you'll be able to craft, and the less selective you'll have to be with which ones you decide to make.

Difficulty

The difficulty seems pretty mild during the 3 hours I've put in so far but has been pumped up at a rate to where I'm starting to feel challenged at times, so I think it's probably fine. There is also a 'harder' mode available from the start, which might be good for those looking for a tougher game from the start.

Story

The lore and story of this game have been interesting to pay attention to so far. The characters are also great, each with their own personalities, motivations, and backstory. There has been some genuinely funny writing, too.. There is a lot of sarcasm, which for me are always appropriate and never too over-the-top, and just enough to give the characters some extra energy, and a serious-but-not-too-serious vibe that I have been enjoying.

Graphics

The graphics look great, of course. You can tell that much from the screenshots and videos here on the store. Unless you have a problem with sprites and pixel-art, you'll enjoy the quality of the drawing and animation. Every inch of this game oozes life and atmosphere. The music is catchy and pleasing to hear. The sound effects are perfect, suiting the style of the game just fine and sounding great.

Overall i would give this game a 9/10.

In my opinion, this is the best game I have played so far in 2018 - Well-worth the money. If you've been looking for something to play, and if this looks good to you, then I say go for it. Quality through the roof, top-notch indie game.

I wish I could think of at least one bad thing to write, but I just can't. It's just so solid so far.
