I was just here watching Twitch and thinking about Twitch culture and the gaming community as a whole, and I thought that what if the gaming industry through a mini revolution? So basically the thought process went like this:
Hmm this game I'm watching is an early alpha build, it's kind of like free QA testing for the devs, which I guess explains why most companies are cool with youtubers and twitch streamers making money off their games because in return they are getting free QA testing and first hand opinions and feedback from not only the general reaction of chat's emote spam but also the more in depth commentary from the streamer who is, more often than not, well versed in gaming culture.
Another thing is that the game I was watching was a game funded through kickstarter.
That fact combined with the previous observation that gamers are having a lot more influence on the tail end of development with all the alphas, betas, early access, and kickstarter type projects were the community is interacting with the development process from the get go; all together fells like gamers are taking back the production of games to be about the art and the stories that come out of it.
Basically it feels like with all the recent changes in the AAA industry that have made the whole thing feel very formal and corporate and money driven in a community that I think prides itself on being very home grown and more about the emotion and love for games. So now there is a big boom in the indie scene were gamers are basically saying we will fund and test advertise and basically be the publisher from the games that we want to see. For example look at the huge amount of good grace CIG have accrued in their production of Star Citizen, yes there are people that don't believe in it but it ok because they is still that very strong core of people that believe in the vision enough to see it through so while they may lack the technical or artistic skill to create the world they want to see they donate their money and time.
So yeah hopefully that's not too confusing to read, talk amongst yourselves if you would like
(also you all are super serious around here :P)
