Great obscure/ Hidden gems from the Steam 2017 summer sale

in #games7 years ago (edited)

Hi so my name is Daniel and advent PC gamer and I have some cool games for you.  As any pc gamer knows there are those certain in a year that either fill you with dread or joy depending on how your financial situation is.  It is that time of year again the steam summer sale is upon. If you are somehow new to pc gaming or steam than first I welcome you to the Master Race, and if you don't know about the steam summer sale, well steam is one of the biggest if not the biggest digital pc game distributors and about 4 times a year they have gigantic sales with huge price cuts and as you can guess they kill wallets everywhere.

As a person who owns many steam games and who collects (current count 1,173) them I am always on the look out to find fun new games. Seeing how huge total steam library is, it can be hard to choose which games are worth getting and it can be even harder when there is a 50, 60 ,75 and 90 percent discount on them. You can always go with the safe choice and buy what everyone else is buying or only buy those big budget games that they finally slashed the price on but where is the fun that? In Addition, if you are like me the obvious choices have already been bought a long time ago. That’s why I am here and am writing this to hopefully open your horizon and show you some games that you will be wishing you would of found sooner. This list will try to include hopefully only obscure or at least slightly obscure games from the sale so don’t expect call of duty of dark souls or anything like while those are great games they are not what we are looking for. So, let’s get started 😊

 Oxenfree $4.99    (Lowest historical price)

Oxenfree is a supernatural thriller about a group of friends who unwittingly open a ghostly rift. You are Alex, and you’ve just brought your new stepbrother Jonas to an overnight island party gone horribly wrong.

Oxenfree while short is completely worth your time investment especially at the sale price. It is an indie side scroller with great art and voice acting. I can’t go into much detail about the story since it will spoil it but just know your choices matter in both the conversations you have and how the mystery evolves and story tells it self.

 Toren  $1.99    (Lowest historical price)

Experience the mysterious, timeless world of Toren, the first adventure game from Brazilian indie developer Swordtales. You are Moonchild, destined to climb the tower (known as Toren) on a hauntingly solitary journey to find your purpose.

Toren is a unique game because it’s not a game in the traditional sense its more focused on the experience than the gameplay. Not to say that the gameplay is bad there is some fighting and some platforming its that it’s not the main focus. The focus is most clearly the exploration and the story which is why it has it has mixed reviews on steam. The problem isn’t that the gameplay or story is bad its that the people that bought it had the wrong idea about the game. For a while steam had it labeled as an action game which it wasn’t it had some but not enough to call it one. Now keep in mind I bought this game at full price and enjoyed it for what it offered. However, I can see how people had a hard time justifying the price the game was asking for compared to the amount of time it took to complete. The game will run you about 3 hours but it worth it. Don’t let all the negative comments stop you from seeing what is here. The small Brazilian team that made this put their heart and soul into this game and it shows and at the 2$ price tag the 3-hour experience is more than worth it plus it comes with trading cards

TL;DR the negative reviews are a bit harsh this is a beautiful game and is completely worth the 2$ price tag

Hand of Fate $4.99/$9 with dlc  (Historically lowest price)

Deckbuilding comes to life in Hand of Fate! An infinitely replayable series of quests - earn new cards, build your deck, then try to defeat it! In a cabin at the end of the world, the game of life and death is played. Draw your cards, play your hand, and discover your fate.

Hand of Fate was truly a hidden gem for me, it was sitting in my library for god knows how long until the day that I randomly downloaded it and fell in love. This is a dungeon and dragon 3rp action RPG card game hybrid as weird as that combination sounds it flows together quite elegantly. When I first played it I was hooked to the point where I was playing for about 6 hours straight. Its unique I had never played anything else like, it was a breath of fresh air. The basic gist of it is that you are an explorer or something along those line and you are looking for your destiny or something profound along those lines. Your “Dungeon master” or deck dealer is the guardian of what you are looking for your goal is to beat his trials to get what you want. You travel on a path made of cards each of those cards are random encounters and you have to fight your way through gaining loot completing tests and fighting enemies until you reach the boss for that section. If you encounter an enemy you are teleported into an arena where you must kill all enemies to proceed. The combat is in 3rd person and takes after the batman formula where you can counter and dodge. At a 5$ price tag it would be hard to pass this one up if you happen to have extra money I would recommend picking up the expansion DLC that adds many more fun ways to play

TL;DR The atmosphere the card collection and deck building is fun and the combat twist even if it’s just the batman formula is fun as well pick up the DLC if you can since its great too

Valley  $4.99     or  5.23 with  Slender: The Arrival  (Historically the lowest price)

Explore the vast and beautiful world of Valley using the power of the L.E.A.F. suit: a fierce exoskeleton that grants exceptional speed and agility along with the phenomenal ability to manipulate the life and death of all living things.

Boy was Valley a blast while most walking simulators have you walking around taking in the scenery and learning the history of the world, hence the walking part. Valley would much rather have you blasting through the beautiful scenery at blazing speed thanks to the L.E.A.F. suit. You can run really fast and jump really high this game takes a real nice approach to the traditional walk simulator formula.  Even while running at what feels like extreme speeds in game the scenery doesn’t fail to impress, whether you are going 90 MPH or standing perfectly still the game still looks great in own indie way. Also unlike other walking simulators there are platforming puzzles and some action with some (albeit small amounts) gravity/ physics stuff sprinkled in. like most of the games of this kind it is not very long but there is plenty to explore and the story is great as well as the fact that it is fun just to comeback and run around. On a side note without spoiling too much there is a cool mechanic that involves taking and giving life to objects and creatures it’s hard to explain especially without spoiling so I day buy it and fight for yourself just know it was interesting

on a side not the game has a bundle that comes with a slender game for about 20 cents more i don't know anything about but for just 20 cents more i say its worth buying it

 Kindergarten 3.99          (Historical lowest @ 2.79)

Welcome to Kindergarten! Have fun trying to learn and share...and not die. That's important too. In a school that's just not quite right, it's important to be friendly...and take out those that aren't

Yes, you did read that right! I am recommending you a game called kindergarten, but don’t let its friendly name fool you. As most good veteran pc players know names can be deceiving and its often the friendliest sounding games that hold the darkest of content. Let me tell you some of the tags that this game has (Funny, Gore, Violent, adventure, Blood) not so innocent sounding now huh? Alright maybe I am making it sound a bit too extreme it really is a funny game it just blindsides you if you are not ready for what it has in store. There are many real laugh out loud moments in this game and it’s great. You play as a kindergarten student on their first day and your goal? Well that is simple don’t die, I mean you do have to collect thing but just don’t die. There are creepy janitors, horrible teachers, broken relationships and dysfunctional  marriages, some of the most realist house play I have ever seen and finally don’t forget about the good ole dead bodies, it has everything you need to have a great day at kindergarten oh and references are everywhere

DeadPool 19.99         (lowest price 9.99)

There are a few important things I need to say before you crack into my insanely sweet game. (Oof. Here we go again.) I'm a mercenary with an accelerated healing factor. I've been described as unstable, which is just plain coo-coo. (Wait, do sane people say coo-coo?) I'm gonna battle for the safety of humans and mutants. (And even mumans.) Be prepared for just about anything. (Holla!)
Key Features:
I made sure to capture all my good sides, so I made my game a third-person action-shooter. (Yep, you get to look at my heinie.)
Keep a look out cuz some of my X-Men pals (Whoa, what pals?!) are making an appearance. (Hope you don't mind picking hair out of your tacos.)
I'm really good at killing, so I made it a blast stringing together combos, and totally eviscerating my enemies. (Ev-is-cer-a-ting!)
I brought my skills and a buttload of my favorite things. Katanas (check), guns (bang!) explosives (boom), duct tape (quack) and of course, yours truly - ME! (Checkmate!)

Ok so this one is technically a little bit cheating but before you take your pitchforks. This game has been out for a while and it was removed from the store for a while too only to be added back when the Deadpool movie came out so I thought it deserved some spotlight again. There is not much to say if you like the Deadpool movie (and I mean who didn’t it was great) then this game is for you. If you like Deadpool in general then you probably already know about this game but its still for you. If you like superhero movies or big block buster action games then this is for you. It has all the Deadpool charm fourth wall breaks comedy bloody action, it’s a great and funny game its also a good beat em up too so at least check it out.

 STEINS;GATE  $20.99     (historically lowest price)

STEINS;GATE follows a rag-tag band of tech-savvy young students who discover the means of changing the past via mail, using a modified microwave. Their experiments into how far they can go with their discovery begin to spiral out of control as they become entangled in a conspiracy surrounding SERN, the organisation behind the Large Hadron Collider, and John Titor who claims to be from a dystopian future.
Interaction with the game takes place through the “phone trigger” system, where the player can receive calls and text messages and decide whether to reply to them or not, changing the outcome of the game’s plot.

Ok so this one is blatantly cheating since Steins Gate is hugely popular no matter how you look at whether it be the anime or visual novel. The only reason I am adding it to this list is because the chances of this game being added to peoples must buy games of the summer sale is probably slim. That and it would be unknown to people who don’t play visual novels or haven’t watch the anime. If you have not played a visual novel don’t feel bad because their really only extremely popular in japan this is not to say that they are a bad genre of game its quit the opposite I’m just saying that their a bit niche. They are exactly like what it sounds like it’s a novel that you can see through picture and for the most part (and in steins gate) you get to pick choices that affect the story. The reason I chose steins gate is because it was the visual novel that got me into playing other visual novels. The story is just plainly amazing it really has you questioning your own existence sometimes. The main story is science fiction and has to do with time travel and alternate reality. If you want an entry into visual novels then this is definitely the one you want to start with.

Pony Island  $1.64    (historical lowest price)

Pony Island is a suspense puzzle game in disguise. You are in limbo, trapped in a malevolent and malfunctioning arcade machine devised by the devil himself. The devil detests having his puzzles solved and poor programming exposed; you will need to think outside the box to proceed and you will be insulted when you do

Do you remember what I said about innocent sounding names and being misleading?  Well this is one of those, when you think of pony island, you start thinking about happiness sunshine and rainbows but that’s not what you get here. In here you are stuck in a video game made by Satan himself. I don’t know maybe he got bored one day and decided to explore the wonders that is indie game development I don’t know but game made by Satan should tell you all you need to know. This is a puzzle game where you have to use your wits to think outside of the box to outsmart Satan and escape the hell that is pony island. This is good old trial and error at its finest there will be text puzzles and platforming it is a real neat adventure with a fun plot you check it out especially for the under 2$ price tag

A Story About My Uncle $1.94   (lowest @ $1.69)  This Is a must buy

A Story About My Uncle is a first person platforming adventure game about a boy who searches for his lost uncle, and ends up in a world he couldn’t imagine existed. Take help of your uncle’s mysterious inventions that let you jump incredibly high and far through beautiful scenery, uncover clues to your uncle’s whereabouts, and meet fantastical creatures that will help you on your journey.
The movement in A Story About My Uncle is a crucial part of its core gameplay – focusing on swinging through the world with a grappling hook that gives the player a wonderful sense of speed and freedom. Soar through a game world with a unique art style and a mysterious story that unravels before you.

A Story About My Uncle is the whole reason I made this list it is one of best games I played, maybe that is hyping the game up too much but it is definitely one of my favorite games and I believe that it should be added to everyone’s cart for the 2$ you cannot justify not buying this game it has my badass seal of approval. This both an amazing platformer and a difficult the environment is rich the story is even it is one of those games that you just have to experience for yourself it’s hard to explain because it’s a personal journey, it give you a story and you take what you can out of it. You play as a boy whose uncle has been missing for a long time. He always used to tell you these incredible tales of another world that he would visit. One day you got to his home and you find this cool looking gear and decide to put it on. Once you put it on you find a device that lets you travel to the world that your uncle always told you about and from there on you experience a journey about trying to find your uncle and discover this new amazing world. The movement in the game is extremely fluid and it has you slingshotting across floating worlds and using parkour to explore. It is an amazing game that everyone should experience and not to mention it has plenty of replay ability since it extremely fun to just parkour across the world

TL;DR Just buy it great and cheap thats it

well that's it thank you for reading hopefully i was able to share with some great games that you might not own just yet have fun and be safe oh and make sure to buy a story about my uncle its great
