Dwarf Fortress is a free downloaded game (supporting Windows, OSX and Linux) that attempts to simulate existence, at least at a planetary and social level. It is considered a primary influence for Minecraft and has been featured in the New York Museum of Modern Art.
Recent updates have added support for 64bit, expanding the possible memory allocation.
While Dwarf Fortress has a notoriously difficult learning curve but those who overcome the difficulty cliff will be rewarded by some of the most emergent gameplay available in gaming.
Beginners should look to the Starter Pack as comes with many community additions that will make your experience much smoother.
The wiki is an invaluable resource for people of all experience levels.
