Extracting food from the air || maybe the Future food source?

Too much carbon dioxide in the atmosphere? Let's just eat it. Solein, developed by the Finnish company Solar Foods, consists largely of carbon dioxide from the air, which is converted into food with the help of solar power.

Solein is the name of the protein powder, which is produced with the help of renewable energies from carbon dioxide, the gas whose increasing concentration in the atmosphere contributes to global warming. It is separated from the air for the production of brine.

Other ingredients are hydrogen-oxidizing bacteria, some water, nitrogen, some minerals and solar power. With the help of solar power, the water is split up. The bacteria are fed with the hydrogen. In a fermentation process, they produce brine, a flour that resembles wheat flour in appearance and taste.

More than 50 percent of brine consists of protein. 20 to 25 percent are carbohydrates. The food also contains 5 to 10 percent fat. Solar Foods wants to add it as a supplement to many foods, such as protein shakes or yogurt.

According to Solar Foods, the idea for brine came from the US space agency National Aeronautics And Space Administration (NASA) and was further developed by Finnish researchers. The European Space Agency (ESA) is supporting the launch.

In 2021, the food will be launched on the market.
