I Am Never Doing Stand Up Comedy Again - Chronicles of a Comic 006

in #funny7 years ago (edited)

AT the first of two shows on Friday night, I got off stage after my opening host set and I said, "I am never doing stand up comedy again." It was a rough set.

Now I have over an hour's worth of jokes in my head, but I went blank when I got on stage. Totally forgot my plan of attack. I didn't do my two new jokes and barely even got a laugh the entire time I was there. It was rough.

When I got off stage I walked to one of the other comics and told them I quit... of course I was joking and again it wasn't too funny.

It is challenging to do comedy if you are not fully prepared. I was seating guests, running food and helping the servers take drink orders for a crowd that was a lot for our new servers to handle. I didn't get a chance to review my game plan before I got on stage and went directly from dropping off some wings to table 6 to walking on stage and getting the show started.

To be honest, it is tough when you bomb. I wouldn't say I totally bombed because I was able to make fun of the fact that my jokes were not working and got some laughs making fun of myself. Always a good topic.

After the show, I took a minute to smoke a cigarette and get my mind right. Gathered my thoughts for the second show and by the time I got on stage for the second show I was ready to kill it... and I did. Rocked the second set of the night.

It just goes to show that life is a lot like comedy... If you plan ahead a little you will do a lot better than just winging it.  At least that is what I've learned so far.

Thanks for reading! Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.

Glad to see you're not ready to throw in the towel yet.

HAHAHA, never! It was a rough set though. Thanks for the support!!!

My old grandpappy used to tell me that if you gotta bomb...Bomb HARD.

He actually never said that. He mostly just grunted, drank whisky and farted. Sometimes he would drive me to school when he was drunk.

Stick with it. Brush it off. As a comic you need to have a short memory from gig to gig. If you bomb on one, do a retrospect (as you have) change it up for the next gig. Keep at it. It will get easier as you build your repertoire and work out your game plan... back on the horse as they say.

I'm not going anywhere, lol. I love the pain too much. I'll keep moving forward... at least the only way to go from here is up. Thanks for the great reply. Hope you have a great week.

we have our good days and bad days as performers , that's how it rolls just keep it going!

Ain't that the truth. If it was easy, everyone would do it. Thanks for the reply. You got a new follower.

I suggest forgetting everything you ever knew!! Admit you are not funny and then bang your head on the wall ten times then get back on stage and talk about it.

HAHAHAHA, that is a great suggestion... the only problem is I did that last week. lol Thanks for the reply. You made me laugh and got a new follower.

I am honored @walkingkeys and apologize that I have no new material for you. You can steal my python act but I'm not sure how that will play on stage. Probably won't flop.

quitting usually works for me

hahahaha, you got a new follower for that great comment. lol you made me laugh.
I don't know how to quit... that is why I'm still smoking.

And I am also very difficult to comment when my mouth is not ready to stop laughing,
Your post is very funny,
thanks.
If you nominate two friends to participate in this contest, it will be really cool,
Thank you very much

Thank you. This isn't an entry post, just comedy open mic related. Thanks for the suggestion and I will put together a post as an entry. Thanks for the reply. You got a new follower.

You have a minor typo in the following sentence:

When I got off stage I walked to on of the other comics and told them I quit.
It should be one of the instead of on of the.

Give the guy a break

lol... hahahaha, thanks @Pechichemena
I did make a mistake and fixed it though. lol I appreciate it.

I love that people can't take getting corrected so they flag a bot.
