FRUITS AND VEGGIES MONDAY

image

Hi guys! Super duper excited for this post.
First things first. This is an entry into a contest created by @lenasveganliving and contest is now hosted by @plantstoplanks and @vegansofsteemit. #fruitsandveggiesmonday
I’ve been on steemit quite a while and for some reason I’ve been finding it difficult to ride the wave. FINALLY found a comeption I’m very excited to participate in so here’s my entry in #fruitsandveggiesmonday contest for the Monday March 18. Celebrating an American st Patrick’s day with some delicious chia seeds.

They grew from non-organic soil that was discarded in the community garden where I live. Basically I was gifted some chia from the grocery and have been sprouting them in small batches (both water and soil) using old raspberry plastic container with a paper towel. I water them every morning and set them near south facing window. It’s winter in the northern hemisphere so they are thirsty for light.

Sadly, the drafty window wilted about 5 sprouts in the 4th day but I was able to eat the rest in day 6, st Patrick’s day I pretend they were clovers!lol
They from the soil were very ... tart and almost sour. After I cut them down it was about 2 tablespoons of sprouts. I used them to break the fast. Then went hiking in the Colorado mountains:)

EDIT: here is the sprouts after cutting:

Loving these little piggies basking in the sun playing in the sprouts. At this point I blow gently to make them grow stronger!

I feel truly blessed to have the ability to grow tiny plants to feed my body a very healthy food!! Here is the sprouts and the piggies the day before I ate them:

Thats great, and the little piggies crack me up, they look like they having an awesome time.

The pigs loved it indeed. Their fav part was playing in the pile right before I ate them :P (the chia not the piggies)

Gorgeous little sprout garden for the piggies ;) I would never have thought of making Chia sprouts, I'm definitely starting a batch tomorrow! Lovely post @painting.peonies!

Hello there @painting.peonies 😉 so how do you eat it? Just like eating some fruits... or you make it as salad with other veggies too..

Amazing look of growing process..and that piggies took care of it very well too..

Great question. A lot of people I see make an entire salad out of their various micro greens but I ate these babies all by themselves this time just to get a feel for the taste. You can either pick them out of soil or cut them with scissors. Some people even have tiny “mowers” for their greens. If you do them in water or terra-cotta plates you can eat the whole thing without the worry of washing dirt off the roots or cutting them down:) I think you get more nutrients that way. They can also be sprinkled over anything as an edible garnish

I'm so happy you found the contest! I think you will find many friends in the group of regular entrants. Love those cute little piggies watching over your sprouts. I have not tried sprouting chia seeds yet, but now I am going to have to add them to my list. I often do broccoli seeds, mung beans and lentils. This was definitely a great addition to a St. Patrick's Day meal and to the #fruitsandveggiesmonday contest!

Hey there.
I’m super happy as well, looking forward to getting to know you more, and for more entries in this contest.
You should def try sprouting them. I will do it in organic soil next time cause they aren’t as sweet as they usually are.

LOVE microgreens and the simplicity of growing your own nutritious greens! Well done @painting.peonies! And welcome to #fruitsandveggiemonday. It is by far my most favourite community. Such special people here. I am sure you will be happy here. One of my last f&v posts was a sunshine salad that I made with sprouted sunflower seeds. Delicious. I never thought of sprouting chia seeds! Going to try it

Ayy thanks for welcoming me so warmly:)
So many awesome people you’re right! I’ll love checking out your posts @buckaroo.
So many exotic sprouts here! I would love to sprout some sunflower seeds! How do they taste?

Nice to see vegan stuff here on Steemit. I am a vegan too. They grow so fast. As soon as I get a place to stay (I travel a lot) I'm going to try to grow in small pots like this.

Nice. How long have you been vegan ? (Most asked vegan-vegan question)
What type of traveling do you do?

I will say that onions grow straight anywhere. You can put them in water in your cup holder and they’ll grow:)
Thanks for stopping by it’ll be great to have a new vegan friend:)

Carnival Challenge - Here are the winners

I think that was quite successful outcome, considering the circumstances, so keep up the great job! As the weather improves you are going to have lots more. Your piggies are adorable and quite appropriate to watch over your little garden, since it is the year of the Pig. Based on the Chinese Horoscope 🌿🐷🌿
