FRUITS AND VEGGIES MONDAY | Morning Glory is the all round CHAMPION !

I was browsing through my photos from months ago and ....
Yeah, sometimes we need to do some spring cleaning on all those photos.

Upload to iCloud, etc

It suddenly hit me that I have so many photos on the vegetable morning glory.
This is indeed a very common vegetable in the South East Asian countries.
At first I thought it was just back home in Malaysia, but then I realised that it's also common here in Vietnam and also in Cambodia.

Green Nature Photo Book Collage.png

On the top left is my version of Malaysian Cantonese cooking style while on the top right is a Cambodian Khmer cooking style. See how similar both dishes are and yet so different in some ways too.

For Malaysian Cantonese cooking, it's slightly more oily and salty while Cambodian Khmer cooking, it's on the sweeter side.

How would you cook morning glory or I call it best as water spinach. Come to think of it, I just brought some from the local wet market over the weekend. Best to cook it tonight before it dries up.

I'll definitely share more in my next post. Hope you enjoy my photo taken from my Huawei

Thanks so much for the rally upvote support :)

The kids love theirs with belacan :D

I brought sambal belacan to Vietnam too
No way can survive without it 😉

OMG!!!
That's just too funny!!!
Never leave your country without sambal belacan :D

Ha ha.. U will be surprised to my shopping list each time family & friends come over.
Majority is dried food, canned food and even Chinese herbs.
Nothing is better than having home ingredients.
Even if I did find some of the ingredients here, they are mainly dried ones and expensive too

Such a wonderful post... but I am thinking; I love Morning Glory flowers... is this the same thing my friend? I know there are many natural ingredients that we would never think about cooking, but certainly better than GMO yucky stuff yes? Also... Congratulations on being chosen for the @phc #rallyupvote!

Thanks so much @wesphilbin
I've never heard about morning glory flowers though.. Don't even know if there are flowers for this plant.
Then again, in this country so many vegetable and fruit flowers can be eaten.
It's either eaten raw as a salad or cooked.

Morning Glories are some of our favorite flowers that we have here in Missouri...

Our granddaughter that passed from Leukemia loved looking at them... so they are special to us you see.

My heart goes to you and your family.
And these flowers are beautiful, gives me a very calming feeling.
I always believe our loved ones are always close to our hearts.. all the time

You got some love from a member of @thealliance family!

@wesphilbin - Effects of Morning Glory? LSD like experience that lasts about 6 hours, but with less hallucinogenic effects. Nausea is common even with untreated seeds. Less anxiety, less intensity than LSD in normal doses.

Not so edible :) Well, it is, but, just say no!

Hello my friend! I'm afraid I must have missed a reference about asking for effects of eating these flowers? I did know about Angel Trumpets being used to make tea... but those who did, died without being able to react... people aye?

Regardless... good to see you!! I hope you had an AWESOME time on your trip? Much love to you my friend!!

Well, actually, you asked about cooking them above? So, I just wanted you to say no. :)

facepalm

That's what I get for doing too much all the time. I'm sorry my friend... and oh yes... I'd not risk eating them myself...

SayingNo

This is very interesting. I've only heard of the morning glory flower. Is this by any chance part of that flower? The morning glory flower supposedly will make a person who consumes it, to have a trip like someone on LSD.

Obviously, if it is the same plant, you are consuming a part that isn't psychedelic.

Wow !! This is definitely news to me.

The morning glory flower supposedly will make a person who consumes it, to have a trip like someone on LSD.

I've really got to be careful then; not to ingest any flower that I'm not familiar with.
In this country, many flowers can be eaten.
It's very common among the locals.

I was mistaken; it's not the plant that has the psychedelic qualities, it's the seeds. The seeds are controlled most everywhere in the world. It may be a specific morning glory strain also, I'm not sure. But I read that the seeds are considered a schedule 3 substance by the FDA in the U.S.

They have it in Thailand too where I found it added to my meals sometimes; I found it enjoyable to eat..

Ah.. Yes, I've heard Thais eat it too but I'm not sure what the locals call it.
However, it is, it must taste good too.
Wonder if they use tom yam paste for flavour.

I do the same thing. I end up loading too many pictures in my phone and... “oh, darn! Guess I have to post another one—shucks!”

Is that you captaining a mega yacht?!

Many say declutter their homes.. Think it's more like decluttering our phone memory stick
Likelyhood next would be decluttering our iCloud too :)

Veggie dishes are really good. Although I'm not vegan, I do enjoy them every now and then 😉👍

I'm not a full 100% vegan but I much prefer vegetables and fruits to processed soy products.
It's way much more healthier and good for digestion.
I feel that my skin dries up if I don't have enough veggies

Nice photos of the vegetable. I’ve never eaten Morning Glory unless it’s called something else here.

I think in some countries, it's called differently depending on their culture.
Most common English word for it is Spinach.. Though I think spinach has many different genes too

I used to order a spinach salad with a warm bacon dressing when I lived in the city and always liked the taste. I haven’t seen it on any menu since that time.

as silly as it sounds... you just reminder me that I need to do a spring cleaning on all my images too!

Hi there @goldendawne
I'm sure you've got lots of photos, you're so much more active on Steemit :)

Looks like water spinach ..but it is morning glory indeed😂 never tried any for my breakfast though

I think some restaurant would blanch it and serve it as a side dish for breakfast.
Hmm.. I think I saw it once in a Vietnamese fusion restaurant serving poached eggs with it as a side dish.

I don't think this kinda thing available as breakfast in Indonesia, but maybe in some part the boiled morning glory is use in the veggie salad with peanut's sauce

Oh yes.. I've seen it before but I get confused on the vegetables..
Is that spinach or some of us call another vegetables kangkung and it's mixed with peanut sauce. We have this similar dish back in Malaysia too

It's kangkung or water spinach.. but in Java, you'll never imagine what kind of green leaves they can add in the salad😂 and I'm not ready to explore that too..

Looks fresh and healthy, we buy bunches of spinach rinse well and cook with mushrooms and friend onions.

I've never tried cooking with mushrooms though..
Are the mushrooms fresh or dried ones ?
You've got to share a post on it ..
I'll love to try this recipe :)

Oh dear I don't photograph food, I cook fresh every day and that is normally out of my head, no recipe books in my home since I have been cooking since I was about 5 or 6 years old....

I place the leaves of spinach or similar in water, they must be covered and put lots of salt (normally rough salt) for an hour or so to ensure they are clean, no slugs or bugs LOL.

Cut out main leaf vein of spinach then slice down fine, warm a pan/pot with oil, ghee, fat, butter which ever you use and brown a couple of sliced/diced onions to start frying.

Add spinach leaves into pot, chopped up fresh mushrooms right on top and allow to cook to consistency you enjoy. Stir all together once cooked then add some cheese sauce to top it off or similar. Quick easy and tasty.

Love your recipe.
I wish we had easy access to fresh mushrooms here.
Most mushrooms we have here are dried ones and used in soups or as a base for stocks.
Occasionally we do get fresh mushrooms but they are way too expensive

I would love to hear more, do you stirfry the greens? Is the Morning Glory plant the vine with flowers? I'm not familiar with this veggie :)

Stirfry is one way of cooking it though I tend to just blanch it with hot water.
Easy, no oil and healthier too.
Though I've never seen it's flowers.. not sure if there is any flowers.
When I visit the nursery, it's always using seeds to grow it

Can I come eat at your house @ireenchew 🙏😁

Ha ha.. My new home is now in Vietnam :)

Hi @ireenchew. Loved your highlight of water spinach. I like this vegetable too. But I find I have to cook at least 4 bunches to have enough for a family meal.

Oh yes.. Me too cos easy to digest and the kids love it.
Only thing is that it dries up very quickly so storage isn't an option

Amazing how this post reminds us to springclean our phones!
Looking forward to your recipes Captain.
Blessings!

Aye Aye..

My pleasure!😁

It looks like what we call watercress in the US. I might just have to enter this contest! I take photos of my dishes all the time and they are clogging up my phone. Thanks for the suggestion! Nice post.

Thanks so much..
All this inspired because of spring cleaning & decluttering my phone photos.

Interesting FAVM post @ireenchew, thank you for introducing us to Morning Glory, I've never even heard of this vegetable!

My pleasure :)
I know some places call it spinach, though not sure if it's from the same genes

I will have to check our Asian local supermarket, if they have it. It looks like something I would like for sure 💚🌿💚

01.jpg

Oh yes.. you've got too..
Easy to cook and perfect for a healthy diet anytime.
I hope they are fresh because it doesn't lasts very long once it's taken off from its roots

Thank you for the advise, I hope I find it 💚🌿💚

Love plant base for my daughter thanx

So glad that your daughter enjoy this..
Very healthy indeed :)

Congrats for the feature at PHC! @steemitbloggers 🙌🙌🙌🎉

Thanks so much @jenina619 !

Interesting! A morning glory to me is a white flower.

Morning glory is a white flower ?
Now.. that's the first time I've heard of it.
You've got to take a photo and show me :)

I would happily do so, but mine aren't growing right now (it's too cold). They'll come back next summer. :) Wikipedia has a neat entry though: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morning_glory

Morning glory
Morning glory (also written as morning-glory) is the common name for over 1,000 species of flowering plants in the family Convolvulaceae, whose current taxonomy and systematics are in flux.

Oh, I never move from home without bringing home goods! :) I am glad you are able to get friends to bring them for you.

I meant to ask you where you are in Vietnam?

Water Spinach. I will have to see if we have the equivalant.

!tip .20

I'm based in Saigon or also known as Ho Chih Minh City.
It's down south of Vietnam, nearer to Cambodia.
Nice city to be in :)

Thanks. I know where that is. On my list of places to go!

🎁 Hi @ireenchew! You have received 0.2 STEEM tip from @dswigle!

Oh my gosh I am forever needing to clear out my photos! Especially food photos, haha. I don't think I've ever tried these either, but I'll have to keep a look out. You can never go wrong adding more greens to your table!

Are absolutely right !!
Imagine during the ancient times, people eat all sorts of vegetables.
Just plain survival

I have to look that up. It can't be what we call morning glory in the US - that is a poisonous plant. Do you happen to know the Latin name for it?

From what I found its scientific name is called called Ipomoea aquatica. Is it the same as what you have in the US.

It is and it is not. Apparently, there are a lot of different kinds of plants that are all falling under the morning glory category. The one we mostly know and is grown as a flower is not edible. Here is a wikipedia entry :)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morning_glory

We always learn more!
