Day 3
Today is Saturday in my part of the world and there were so many exciting NaNoWriMo activities announced I wanted to take advantage off.
There was a write-in at a Cafe not far from me that is one of my favorite Cafes. It was one of the first in San Diego that was somewhat reminiscent of a Vienna coffee house - old sofas, chairs, funky lamps - a place that feels like a bohemian home.
And the cake!! Oh, the cakes!! So good. Just like at home.
It makes sense since the founders were from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Three guys who had trained in Europe and brought their knowledge and hard work along with them to San Diego.
No wonder I was in love - with the cake and the atmosphere.
They ended up building a chain of Living Room Cafes in San Diego - and sold them all. I hadn't been in a long time and the write-in sounded good.
If only I would have woken up in time - wait, I actually did. But I forgot that I wanted to go there... But thinking about it now, it explains why I have been wanting to eat cake all day long...
I didn't.
But I wrote about it.
Excerpt 1
Often a formal invitation which required another table clothes, the one that was hand embroidered and all pretty. The table was set in the “good room” for those occasions and the best china got to leave its protective shelf in the cabinet with glass doors. Children’s hands were not allowed to touch the cups that cost a hundred dollars each and were made of such fine china that a sharp look could break it.
Fancy pieces of pastries came placed on dollies from the Konditorei - a cafe with a bakery that only made pastries and beautiful cakes. They now had to be arranged on a platter, served with real silver cutlery that had been polished the day before or that morning.
Hosting a Kaffee klatch was a lot of work - like everything Germans do or did. Work is life, Life is work - such a hard cycle to break.
But perform one must. If the table is not fancy enough, the whipping cream not plenty enough, and the urging to eat more, not intense enough, all of that will be the subject of discussion at the next Kaffeklatsch at another house the guests are invited to.
Aunt Henny was the best at never shutting her mouth. She could talk and talk and talk and knew everyone's business. Her husband, uncle Ernst, was a much quieter person. He really didn’t have much of a choice. If he would have been a talker too, silence would have been impossible in their house.
Excerpt 2
At least three Newspapers were on the table. The two local papers had mostly local news and it is important to know what is going on. Reading the obituaries is a must in a small town.
If the card of condolence is not sent, feelings are hurt. One must decide which level the deceased person is
• Ignore
• Send card
• Go to funeral
• Make a personal visit
In a small town, these are important decisions to make. One wrong step can cost many opportunities in the future. Bad feelings are kept alive for a long time- since there is nothing else to do.

Yup. I am writing with spell check turned off and have no idea where I am going - I set out to do something very different. So, once I see what is up, I might publish more. But right now, fixing it and such is a bit overwhelming. As you know, I constantly have letters in the wrong order...

Wow! Great word count! Shame about the cake! I have been for coffee and cake in Germany. Very important, very enjoyable! :)

Yes!! I think that is the only thing (kind of) I miss about Germany :)
I really like Germany! Their shops are ace: surprisingly they stock a lot of vegetarian stuff. And I don't drink any more but love non alcholic beers. Their selection is absolutely amazing, vitually every bottled beer has a non alcoholc version. Also, I find my German friends have a taste in music more similar to mine as a Brit. The French had a law implimented in the early 90's I think where all radio stations were obliged to play a high percentage of French language songs. So the French have a less international sense of music (except for the large numbers of people who search it out of course).

I like the little tidbits of what life was like in that small town. The Kaffe klatsch's sound like an important part of their lives.
My Mom had the same delicate china which was only used for holidays. This resident cat is your #NovMadFan. : )
There will be surely some paragraphs that make me laugh whenever I read yours. And here is Aunt Henny and Uncle Ernst. Haha.

#NovMadFan Bruni checking in on your progress Marianne. Looks like you're right on track to 50k. I like the little excerpts, easier for me to read. 🤭
