"What I wouldn't give for a bowl of pig slop" a weekend freewrite

in #freewritehouse5 years ago

Yay! It’s the weekend!!! So that can really only mean ONE THING!!

It’s time for the #weekendfreewrite!

Each week @mariannewest gives three #freewrite prompts and you have to write for five minutes using each prompt - but no cheating and looking at the next prompt UNTIL you have finished with the first one!

You can find this week’s first prompt here: https://steemit.com/freewrite/@mariannewest/weekend-freewrite-7-13-2019-part-1-the-first-sentence

The rooster was going off again at 5 in the morning. It was time to do something.

"Ma!" I shouted as I leaped out of bed.

Ma didn't move.

"Ma!" I shouted, again, pulling on my pants.

She didn't even stir.

"For the love of all that is good!" I shouted and stormed around the bed, my pants falling down as I walked almost causing me to fall arse over tit. "Wake up, you dosy cow!" I took Ma by the shoulder and gave her a good shake.

She didn't move.

"Ma?" My voice sounded different, now, even to my ears. I pulled back the covers. There she was lying staring up at me.

She was dead, there was no mistaking it.

I sat down on the bed, beside my wife, the mother of my children. "Ma!" I said, again, my voice sounding weak and croaky.

Water. Dripping, dripping. Dripping. She was slowly losing her mind with all the dripping. That's what old Jessie Jakes told me.

"I need you to come and fix the tap on my sink, Burt!" she shouted over the phone. I swear she was shouting so loud I could hear her from the farm two miles up the road.

"I can't come until this afternoon," I said.

"I need you now, Burt!" Jessie shouted.

I held the phone from my ear. "I can't come until later, Jessie. It's Agatha's funeral this morning. Let me bury my wife, then I'll come and fix your tap."

Silence. Then, "Just make sure you do!"

I put the phone down and looked over at Kevin. "Time to go, son."

Kevin nodded. He looked funny in a suit. I'd never seen him in anything other than jeans and a t-shirt.

"Come on, then Pa," Kevin said.

Lizzy was sitting on the step, outside.

"You mind your good dress, Lizzy," I said to her as I stepped out of the door. "Ma won't be happy if you show up to her funeral with a dusty dress!"

Lizzy smiled, a weak smile but one that was full of love.

"At least you got your children," Mr Freeman, the grocer said as I picked up my shopping last Monday. "Children are a comfort at times like this."

He was right.

As I closed the door and inserted the large key into the lock - the one that Ma had been begging me to change for the last twenty years, because it always stuck if you didn't twist the key just right - I noticed the mark halfway up the door. Made by a saucepan Ma had thrown at me last year after I told her I wouldn't eat her stew 'cause it tasted like pig slop.

I twisted the key just right, heard the click of the lock and stood up straight. What I wouldn't give for a bowl of pig slop right now. I smiled.

"Come on kids. Let's not keep your Ma waiting."

As usual, I used themostdangerouswritingapp.com to write each five-minute freewrite (and then tidied it up a bit in google docs afterward):

I can understand that but be careful what you wish for, Pa.

you make me sad

I wish Burt had been a little nicer to his wife.

Don't it always seem to go, that you don't know what you've got til it's gone...

Reminded me of that song :)
A little tardy on the prompt but an invitation is good for anytime
