Cozy Wednesday - Coffee with Thoughts

Yesterday I figured out, observing the eyes of whom I love, that missing something is not always wanting that back in the present.

It's like reminding it so deeply that we feel happy and sad, stuck in the fragment of time between the present and the past. It's like a movie that we watch countless times. Even knowing that there's no sequel.

It's a sneaky feeling. Even if we have all the tools to destroy it, there's always something about it that stays in our heart. It's immortal, pleasurable, bipolar. It's the moment when we let ourselves to be the main character of our own story.

Sometimes I mix up this feeling with Life, cause they were born together and I always see them holding hands. When they fight, it's chaos, depression, alienation.

When they’re in peace though, it's like a garden of roses accepting that it's a garden of roses and not a garden of sunflowers. But it still remembers each sunflower that have ever gave it life.

That's Saudade. With a cup of coffee. (or tea, who knows)

—————————————————

“Saudade” is a Portuguese word that doesn’t have translation in any other language. The closest in English would be “missing” something, but it’s deeper than that.

I decided to post a different text than what I usually do, one more ‘poetic’ :) Hope you like it!

Happy Cozy Wednesday :)

I exist in a state of saudade. Thank you for your words.

Aw Me too! That state has good days and bad days :) Thank you for your comment.❤️

no words can describe the beauty of this thought. All the words that I want to think of pales in comparison and gets lost in translation.

Saudade is such a powerful word invoking emotions of being in the middle.
My mind's imagery is of dusk while holding a glass of wine, in remembrance.

Beautiful musing on a cozy Wednesday.

Saudade (or Saudades) itself is a really important word in the Portuguese culture. We feel it in our villages, poems, songs...

My mind's imagery is of dusk while holding a glass of wine, in remembrance.

That sounded so beautiful, like a poem (not a bad one :) ). It is a good idea to switch the cup of coffee for a glass of wine 🤔Thank you for your kind words, mentor!

First off, this is beautiful. I like the imagery that it invokes, of a longing for past things that aren't really present or future things because how could they be? Or letting ourselves be the main character even though who else would we be?

Very nice.

Since I am a 'Word Man', but am not and sadly never will be Portuguese or Brazilian, I've been hunting down definitions saudade. This one is what pops up on Google:

a feeling of longing, melancholy, or nostalgia that is supposedly characteristic of the Portuguese or Brazilian temperament.

and this comes from a quote by Manuel de Melo:

a pleasure you suffer, an ailment you enjoy

I wonder at both definitions. What is so melancholy or nostalgic about being either Portuguese or Brazilian? And why would anyone suffer with a pleasure, or enjoy an ailment?

I can think of times where I wallowed in self-pity, and prolonged it way more than I really needed to because I wanted to feel it more. I can't say that I particularly enjoyed it, though. It was more a "don't deserve punishment" or whatever negative thing happened, so I'm just going to feel sorry for myself for a while.

But I don't know if that describes this. It seems more like something fated, something that can't be escaped, no matter what. It is who you are and what you will always be.

Or maybe it's more about potential unobtainable, or a feeling that there's more to life than what's within the grasp.

Not sure if I like any of that, but I completely understand how easy it would be to feel any of those things.

Am I even close with any of this? If not, I would like to understand. :)

It's so nice that you looked the word up on google, I appreciate that! Hmm.. I'm not sure what's so melancholic about being Portuguese/Brazilian. We have a lot of authors that talk about this feeling and we grow up reading, learning and listening about it so it's part of the culture. It might be in our blood, too! Who knows hah

There's a Portuguese song called "Desfado" by Ana Moura that talks about how inconsistent we can be, it says 'I have saudades of having saudades' (what??) So yeah, it doesn't make sense but it doesn't need to! I don't think there's a right or wrong way of defining it, each person has his/her own ways of feeling it. And that's ok! We perceive things diferently.

I'm not sure if it has to do with feeling sorry for yourself, at least in my point of view. I think it's more accepting/embracing the melancholy instead of hiding it. There's something magical about it. I don't know, haha Not sure if I'm making sense!!

Anyways, thank you @glenalbrethsen so much for your comment & reflexion !!! :)

Texto lindo, muito reflexivo e triste. Beijos

Obrigada 😍😍😍😍 Beijinho!!!

Nice
Thought provoking.

I guess i will do a post on saudade

Thank you. That'd be so nice, I'd love to read it!!!

That's a very deep thought and I really like it. I have never tried thinking so much about everything over a cup of coffee or tea.

Thank you, my dear! Coffee or tea are perfect cozy drinks for a thoughtful moment :)) Hope you're having a great weekend!

I am. I hope you are, too. :-)

"saudade" very meaningful... evokes a sense of loneliness and incompleteness, longing for someone who is missing :)

Very nice , specially when i saw the cup of coffee( which i really love ) - it seems missing someone releases the loneliness inside when you sip a cup of coffee : hahaha :) lol!!!

Thanks for sharing !!!

IT is! Yes, that feeling is very meaningful. Hah I love coffee too and I totally agree that the melancholic feeling has all to do with a sip of a hot drink haha :D Thank you so much for your comment! Have a lovely day xx

No words can describe it. I can't even think a word for that in our language. I think we miss the happy moments that we have experienced from a certain thing/person but not the person or thing itself.

It's hard to describe! YES.. it's that memory of something that will probably never happen again but it makes you feel happy/melancholic about thinking of it. Thank you for your comment ❤️

I kept coming back to this saudade thing. It's like an old feeling wants to be remembered but I don't know what lol!

Oh yes I feel the same!! Saudade is def that too. Bit CRAZY haha Are you anyhow related with Portuguese culture? hehe :) xxx

That's saudade, too? Incredible lol!
Maybe a negligible percentage. I am a Filipino and the Philippines had been under Spanish regime for hundreds of years bringing some Portuguese with them I believe.

This is a lovely post! My best friend is Portuguese American and has talked about saudade before. I think it's a beautiful concept, and this post captures that feeling. Thanks for sharing!

It's a beautiful word! I think Portuguese are proud of it hah :) It is indeed a beautiful feeling. Thank you for commenting <3

Great poetry about the feelings of missing someone and wanting him so badly in your life

Thank you for appreciating it!

With words like that, no wonder fado evokes such deep emotions, even for those of us that don't understand the lyrics...

Still not sure I understand what "Saudade" means, but thanks for teaching me a little bit about it :)

Ooh yess! Fado has a lot of emotions to it, and a good Fado is one that makes you feel them, even if you don't understand the lyrics. :) We probably don't understand it very well, either! hah Thank you for your comment ***

This is beautiful--and I think it’s perfect paired with the image of a cup being filled...almost like you are the cup and the experiences and memories are the different coffees and teas that have filled the vessel during its life. :)
