Growing up in Port Alberni a valley surrounded by mountains, the threat of coming across a cougar even in town was a real possibility!

They are a very cunning predator, with skills of mimicry and deception you can be stalked and taunted for miles through the bush and have no idea what it is tailing you. They say if you see a cougar it is already too late as with how clumsy humans are it is very unlikely to accidentally walk across one without you alerting them of your presence.

I have personally seen many cougars but never in a situation where they were any threat, I’ve been very lucky that way.

My uncle on the other hand was very Lucky to be out with his dogs while picking mushrooms the one time. He said right from the moment he set off that day his dogs were in high alert, constantly paying attention behind for hours. It wasn’t until the final moments of the day that the cougar exposed it self just before getting back to his vehicle. The cougar came out from beside them and my uncle’s dogs were both already aware of its presence happening to intercept the cougar from cutting off the path to the vehicle.

While the dogs and the cougar had a eye to eye showdown my uncle dropped everything sprinting for the vehicle. Everything turned out to be just fine but had his dogs not intervened my uncle swore the cougar would’ve taken him, it was mangy and hungry looking!

The scariest part of his story was on his drive back out of the bushes, he came across that same cougar watching him drive out of the territory. As the bird flies he says it was five KM away from where he first encountered it but the road out was a long looping road around the mountain almost a 45 minute drive.

He always stated that he figured the cougar watched him drive in to the area knowing it was a dead end road that he would be getting out eventually and had followed him the entire time. Uncle said he didn’t notice the cougar on the bluff on the way in but he should have known something was off when his dogs started acting protective immediately after getting out of the car.

First time ever seeing a cougar in his mushroom picking spot and it was so scary he never went back for his equipment!
