You Gotta Choose Between Two Types of Pain

Pain is an inevitable part of life. No matter what you do, some form of pain will be involved.

The good news, though, is that not all pain is permanent, nor is it always harmful.

I’ve learned that in life, you have to choose between the pain of discipline and the pain of regret. As Jim Rohn famously said, "The pain of discipline weighs ounces, while regret weighs tons."

The pain of discipline is temporary. Once an action becomes a habit, the struggle eases, and maintaining that discipline involves much less discomfort. On the other hand, the pain of regret is permanent and can worsen over time.

Both losing weight and staying overweight come with their own pain—one involves discipline, the other regret.

One of the hardest feelings in life is realizing you could’ve done better, but chose not to. You could’ve been in better financial shape, had a healthier body, gained more knowledge, or honed your skills, but instead, you settled for less than you deserved.

You can’t avoid pain in life, but you do get to choose which kind of pain to endure. I choose the pain of discipline and always will. I’d rather give my best and fail than do nothing and fail, because at least I won’t regret not trying or being lazy.

In the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take. So, take action now while you still can.
