Finances defnitely play a big role. WHen your everyday life consist of just trying to find something to eat and/or trying, many times fighting everyday just to keep a roof over your head, it's hard to tell someone, just smile. I try to approach people with inspiration as well, but compassion first and foremost. Compassion is emphasizing some understand of someones situation, ya know...then after understanding, then you give them encouragement.
Sure, sure. It might not be something that happens immediately, but I think that making a plan can really help you get rid of the things that are making you unhappy.

Great post. I have to say though........ that being self sufficient means having money also. When I got divorced 12 years ago and my wife took all my money I was left destitute. I then lost my job as a systems analyst and I have been working at a restaurant ever since. I did go back to school and got a degree in Spanish and I tried to get hired as an ESL teacher but that didn't work out so now I spend my nights writing fiction stories. Even something as simple as getting an oil change makes me consider how much more work at the restaurant I'm going to have to do in order to be able to pay for it. So I guess you could say that I am not entirely self sufficient now even though I used to have a great quality of life before she took all my money. I hope one day that my fiction stories actually sell and I plan to publish my first book on amazon.com before too long.
Wow, so you are what we call a "Stehaufmännchen" in German. No idea how to translate that into English. Probably a "weebles wobble"? Llike somebody who always stands up no matter how many times he has fallen down.
Surely money plays a role - especially when you don't have it. I wrote about that a couple of days ago when I was in Las Vegas. At places like that you realize quickly that money counts: because it's everything.
Money can buy freedom, no doubt about that.

Man verliert sich schnell mal im Alltag und seinen Gewohnheiten. Manchmal muss man einfach einen Schritt raus / zurück tun, um das ganze Bild zu betrachten. Sich mit anderen auszutauschen, hilft natürlich auch immer.
