How did you first respond to the message of freedom?

I was never a conservative or a liberal. My Mom was vaguely liberal and my Dad was vaguely conservative (they're both better now, very libertarian) but both were very anti-authoritarian and I just landed in the middle. My Dad would brag about punking teachers by being smarter than them and tell stories about ignoring the law while growing up on a ranch in Wyoming. My Mom, who put in a lot of hours driving my brother and I to and from school, sports, and all sorts of enriching activities, gave us a choice in music from the two genres she enjoyed: oldies or classical. We always chose the oldies! While rarely explicitly libertarian, the music of the sixties and seventies has a distinct disdain for authority that pop music lacks today. As a Canadian green card holder, (now a "naturalized citizen") she was showed us the silliness of government borders and collectivism.

So when I was in high school, there was a point at which I was asked, "Do you want to be a Republican or a Democrat?" My response was something like, "What? I don't have a choice? I have to be super friggin' lame?! This is America! There must be an alternative!" "Well, there's these crazy Libertarians over there, and they like to be left alone." As a punk kid, (who got arrested in middle school for trying to blow up the boys' bathroom for a prank) I was like, "YUP! That's me! Give me that sweet sweet freedom!" Because that was my way in, I identified with the party before I understood what the word libertarian meant.

I had been subjected to years of military propaganda as a typical young American and my parents did nothing to combat this directly, so I was the worst kind of Libertarian: a militarist. "I don't trust the government to do anything except decide who lives and dies!" I joined the Marines at 17 years old as a reservist so that I could do some enlisted time before becoming an officer after college. Then in 2004, while at Claremont McKenna College, I volunteered to go to Iraq. I did seven months in Fallujah with a Civil Affairs Team. After graduating, I volunteered to go back, "Because I didn't get a Purple Heart the first time." (I didn't get the chance because I got in trouble for bringing a gun back from Iraq as a souvenir and spent a year managing a barracks building and mowing lawns as a Sergeant who spoke Arabic with Civil Affairs combat experience. That's why I was disgruntled enough when I got out to really question things.)

I became a true libertarian only after getting out of the Marines and joining Iraq Veterans Against the War. I was surrounded by dudes (and a few great women!) who were risking their lives with me in civil disobedience to protest a war that we knew from firsthand experience was wrong. I knew that they were legit, so I knew they were engaging in the broader political debates from a genuine place of wanting to better humanity. I was generally unsatisfied that so many of our debates came down to matters of opinion. "I'm a Libertarian, so I know I'm right about everything, I just have to prove it!" So in seeking a logically consistent, airtight worldview, I became a libertarian.

I read books and watched documentaries and I didn't resist. I sought it out for myself. You can read a person's soul by how they respond the message of consistent freedom, of ethics applied to politics. Of course you are looking through the lens of all the propaganda and conditioning that they have been subjected to, but you can almost always get a glimpse of their true nature. So for me, the real test was not how I sought out freedom, but rather how I resisted it before I understood it. Even as head of Libertarians of the Claremont Colleges, I did not let anyone properly challenge my militarism. I could call it the arrogance of the Marines (we like to say, "It's hard to be humble when you're the best!") but I have to own that for myself. I was too committed to my identity of being a Marine to hear the truth.

I suppose there's a lesson in patience to be had here. Not everyone can adjust their worldview overnight. I'm grateful that so many were so patient with me! I suppose the nice thing you could say about my response to the message was that I thought it all through very thoroughly for myself. For those of us who need that time, when we finally realize the truth, we know it in the bottom of our souls and so we are much more inclined to be committed to the cause. Having woken up so many people myself now, I've seen the whole range of possible reactions. Some people simply reject the concept of ethics. Those are the ones you really have to worry about! Some are reluctant, surprised, dismayed, scared. All of these responses can slow down the awakening. But I'm always encouraged by how many people today are ready to embrace the truth as soon as they hear it. Of course any thoughtful person has to go over it and turn it over in their head and compare it to their current worldview. My girlfriend, Stacey, is an amazing example of someone who didn't have the emotional attachment to statism and converted almost immediately. We met at a party and had a conversation that was her introduction to the message. When she read FREEDOM! a couple weeks later, her reaction was, "I can't believe this perspective has been kept from me!" and that's why I love her. How did you first respond to the message of freedom and what do you think it says about you?

I am the author of FREEDOM!, a book endorsed (I mean banned) by the US Department of “Justice.” You can get a copy here. I’m running for Not-President in 2020 on the platform of the peaceful, orderly, and responsible dissolution of the United States federal government. You can find out more here. Whoever has the top comment on this post after 24 hours can claim a free signed copy of FREEDOM! by sending me an email with their address to adam@thefreedomline.com.

I also was a punk growing up rebelling against popular culture and authorities. My older next door neighbor was always trashing pop music which led me to start broadening my musical horizons. I discovered a few bands such as Guttermouth and Anti-Flag while also discovering skateboarding. The seed had been planted, but it took quite a long time for the seed to sprout and grow.

I was very anti-authority when it came to teachers, principles, business owners, and cops because of skateboarding. I had a hard time shaking the nationalism and militarism though.

I found Ron Paul after a co-worker had recommended I watch Zeitgeist and America - From Freedom To Fascism. Ron Paul was the only politician who made sense to me. Thus began my real dive down the rabbit hole.

While preparing to sleep on the floor in an old farmhouse, with a bunch of other Ron Paul delegates for the MN state Convention in 2012, one of my new friends mentioned this crazy Adam Kokesh guy. He might be a little crazy for my tastes I was told. So of course, I had to look him up.

I began listening to Adam VS The Man and watching the associated youtube videos. It took a few months to get the statist out of me, but Adam guided the way.

The message of Freedom has meant a lot to me and I cannot thank Adam enough! Anarchy, Love, and Peace to you!

Thanks for the great comment! "Die For Your Government!" was very influential for me. Still one of my all time favorite songs.

When I was in High School I was a Communist. At least I said I was. I really just liked the shock value. Once I read something about it I decided I was not. When I was deciding to vote in my first election a friend of mine said, “you should check out the Libertarians, they want to legalize pot.” I was sold and voted a straight Libertarian ticket, except president. I didn’t want to “waste" my presidential vote so I voted for Bill Clinton. After that I did not really care about anything political until September 11th 2001. Those planes hitting those buildings scared the shit out of me. I had 2 children at the time and I fell for the fear tactics hook line and sinker. I became a Neo-Con. I had always been fiscally conservative. Now I was terrified and bought into the nationalistic bullshit that I heard all over the radio every day. I also had always been quite liberal when it came to social issues and I was far from Christian in my religious beliefs, but I put that aside and followed the Republican line. I then remarried. Amber my wife is a Libertarian. Going into the 2012 elections I was a Michelle Bachman supporter, I know. My wife liked the old guy on the stage. So, I listened to all of them and slowly the old guy, Ron Paul, crept up my favorites list. It was easy to agree with him on many things for me. Truthfully it was his position on the Fed that really caught my attention. The final piece was war. I remember the day I realized I had been duped. I cried into my wife's shoulder as guilt turned to anger. How could I be so dumb. You see I read a lot and I liked people such as Thomas Jefferson, Patrick Henry, and John Locke. I became a local warrior for Ron Paul and began working for a local candidate for the house who supported Dr. Paul. I read Mises, Rothbard… you get the idea. After both Ron Paul and my candidate lost and my wife and I saw first hand the corruption in the Gop, I decided to not deal with politics at all. I continued to evolve first into a minarchist and eventually into an anarchist. In 2016 I told my wife, while watching a video on youtube of this guy I had discovered and began following in 2012, that I would only vote again if that guy ran for president. I never expected that I would meet him about a year later as he was preparing to run for president. That man was Adam Kokesh. Now I am working for his campaign and doing my part to share the message. Meeting him was better than I expected. I expected him to be full of himself. He was not. He was about Freedom and he inspired me to join the new American Evolution.

Thanks, brother! You're very lucky to have woken up in such a way that you were able to have that cathartic emotional experience. It speaks to your willingness to admit when you're wrong even when you're not fully emotionally prepared for it.

I do not think there is any freedom in the world.. And there is no democracy either. There are rules on which we live and which the government dictates... And so it is in the whole world!

ордо.jpg

Freedom must be found inside, then no government can chain you. I am free.

I do not deny!Simply I speak as in a life happens..

I've never trusted anyone because I have always felt like I'm getting coerced, controlled, and extorted. It always angered me. I have always been able to see the inconsistencies of government, but when I read Adams book it created a much more compressed, concise, and clear perspective to the whole thing. Learning to let go of that anger and turn it into knowledge and information was the best experience I have ever felt. Ignorance is bliss? No, the truth will set you free, and freedom is much more blissful. I've been fighting to get the freedom to do the things I want most of my life... Still fighting.

Thanks! Good to know that the book is having the desired effect!

Say hi to Baloo!!!

FREEDOM wasn't something that you may truly enjoy from my side here. Culture and traditions of most African tribes preaches devoted submission to the "authorities" regardless of their true character. You are just expected to be a follower, an obedient one.

However, from some of the songs by Fela Kuti (The Pioneer of the AfroBeat genre), I came to be fascinated by what TRUE Freedom is and will be. I was exposed to some shitty corruption against humanity, freedom and good governance.

My Dad, who is not particularly interested in politics or sorts, is a definition of freedom. He'll leave us to make decisions and choices, written down in our pads and presented to him at the dinner table for accountabilities. It was some crazy memories.

Then he will asked us (the children) to judge our decisions whether they are morally, ethically and socially sound. We'll debates and defends our choices vehemently with each other while he moderates the sessions. It was my foundation of being responsible and truly free.

And @adamkokesh, I hope I'll be able to get a hard copy of your book here. It'll mean a lot.

Thank you!

"Some people simply reject the concept of ethics. Those are the ones you really have to worry about! Some are reluctant, surprised, dismayed, scared. All of these responses can slow down the awakening"totally true i do really agree with this statmnt thank you friend @adamkokesh always provide some amazing topics. have a sweet night.

interesting story

When I finished high school, I was pretty much a socialist. Then (believe it or not), higher education started changing me when, in college, I switched to social sciences. In economics, my professor showed me the great advantages of free trade and how it lifted people out of poverty.

During my bachelor degree, I further saw how free(er) markets helped society, thanks to having half my professors being classical liberals.

My position was cemented when I read all those authors (Smith, Bastiat, Say, Mises)

@adamkokesh Freedom is a state of mind. When people live in freedom, they do not willingly choose leaders who pursue campaigns of terror. When people have hope in the future, they will not cede their lives to violence and extremism. So around the world, America is promoting human liberty, human rights, and human dignity. We are standing with dissidents and young democracies, providing AIDS medicine to bring dying patients back to life, and sparing mothers and babies from malaria. And this great republic born alone in liberty is leading the world toward a new age when freedom belongs to all nations.

For me I took a while, as I was beguiled by progressive issues like ending the Vietnam war and Earth Day. Ann Rand never helped. Basically when I kept seeing both parties having WAY too much interest in things they had no right to know, and both parties never accomplishing issues that I felt were morally imperative, I looked around. Initially it was just the lesser evil (the two oligarchies and the Libertarians) but actually the advent of decentralized cryptocurrency gave me the first glimmer that the oppression could be lifted through a combination of potent action and community building. Still on my way to having my thoughts freer but looking forward to more and more freedom.

I was a conservative, and started questioning the war on drugs.
'We' weren't winning, but there was this mentality that if we let our guard down, the drugs would come flooding in (all by themselves) and ruin everyone's lives.
I realised most of the people I knew who abused drugs already had ruined lives, and figured maybe attacking them might be a bad way of helping them.
If you're curious and brave, you'll get here eventually.

Took me all of 15 minutes listening to Ron Paul in the the debates 6 years ago to know that I strongly agreed with everything he said on war, the drug war, central banks, individual liberty, and personal responsibility. Then after an hour of research to realize that my once beloved Democratic party was not anti war, anti drug war, anti central banks, pro individual liberty nor even truly liberal. Then I was all in libertarian 100% and never looked back.

This is useful post.

El presidente don't upvote shitty posts! :D

I did not understand something

Trump will explain it to you...

I have to admit that Your story reminds me on the story from "Born on the 4th of July"...Tom Cruise...Although it is done by Hollywood establishment much truth in it...I long way you have passed, so now is real time for new beginning ?

Look forward to seeing how this campaign progresses. We need to break that mindset of the American people of only seeing red & blue. Need to get them to turn off the #mainstreammedia first perhapsmsm2.jpg

I read your words line by line and it gave me a glimpse of how your fight for freedom began. I am a Nigerian, but I know we need to embrace this fight for freedom in Nigeria and all over the world. Lucky you to have such beautiful parents with distinct personalities, like you said it has helped you to become what you are today. Thank you for being you.

Quite an interesting article. It was a good read.

a very interesting story about your life,
hopefully you and your healthy family always,
what is the future goal will be achieved quickly

Thanks for sharing your background on how it all started. Enjoyable read! I always find it interesting on what people's parents are like, and how they respond to their children's philosophies on life and how they respond to it all.

Wow. What a read. I guess freedom from servitude is fine for me which is why I embraced crypto to avoid govt controlling my income and taxation which I see as reapoff. Does that make me a libertarian ?
I updated on tax related issues between IRS & German options which is two divergent view, find time to take a look via my blog
Great post as always.

I see the parasitic scum paraded as politicians and faceless entities run by greedy elites ruining our world and by design, so that when we inherit it, there is nothing left, and we beg the government for everything. Well I ain't buying into that shit!

Since 2011, when I was given time to do my own self investigating, and saw for the first time, I was 19, in my own eyes that 9/11 was a huge false flag. Tried convincing everyone I knew, had all sorts of reactions like you describe above.

Nothing has been more difficult tho, than to convince my father and other old men his age that it was a false flag. They are so in bed with the lies.... but Love conquers all, so I keep trying.

Good on you Adam, for having such strong influence to help shape this world for the better! Freedom! Who doesn't want true freedom!? Only those who are still blind to the truth...

Tidak tau bilang apa apa

I really like your blog
I support it

@adamkokesh

People say they want Freedom, but do they really want it?

If we think about it, obviously democracy is the best political system right now, but the reality is that if the state does not intervene in society, people get lost and without knowing what to do, they need someone to show them the paths to take.

This is very polemic theme, because obviously we want freedom in theory, but when we are free we get confused and we (society) seek for counseling.
