US multinational technology behemoth IBM will hire around 1,800 local French people over the next two years, including a significant number skilled in blockchain technology. The intention is to create a large research team that can focus on blockchain projects, artificial intelligence and the Internet of Things.
IBM CEO Virginia Rometty had lunch with French President Emmanuelle Macron in Paris on Wednesday, and took the opportunity to discuss several new investments that her company proposed as part of the Tech for Good Summit, which has been organized by Macron. In an interview Rometty would subsequently give to Le Monde, she said:
“In the next two years, we will hire 1,800 people in France at IBM. In January, we announced a project to recruit 400 people for research. These jobs will include AI, blockchain ... and the Internet of Things.”
The good news for France is that IBM will be looking to hire the best part of 2,000 French citizens over the next two years. Around 400 of the new recruits will be either pre-skilled in or will be trained to a high level in blockchain technology. IBM plans to put together a massive research team in France, and their focus will be on investigating multiple block chain based projects. This team will also handle the study and development of artificial intelligence, and investigate potential uses and dangers of the “Internet of Things” (the interconnection via the Internet of computing devices embedded in everyday objects).
IBM’s roster of corporate clients in France includes Orange Bank, LVMH, Luis Vuitton, Moët Hennessy, Genrali and the French National Railway System (SNCF).
