Journey Into Fractally - #5: Consensus Ranking Tool! + Thoughts On Last Two Weeks

Hey so wanted to give everyone an update on my fractally experience. Today we used the Consensus Ranking tool the team has been building and demo'd in this video

It worked great! We probably were able to reach consensus in 10 minutes or less. It could have been the nature of our group's contributions, but the tool allowed us to keep the focus on the ranking. It was very easy to use and intuitive. It'll be interested to see how quickly someone brand new to the process picks it up. It was a fun experience. I was also excited when Dan mentioned these tools will eventually be peer-to-peer without a central server.

Two points to consider:

  1. Dan (@dan) mentioned there should be some indicator that indicates who is not in consensus so we can focus on having them speak and explain. (Idea: Maybe a colored dot can appear next to the user's name on the video box?)
  2. Jordan brought up the idea to not display the ranking real-time to minimize group-think. Dan agreed and mentioned there could be a way to do it without adding too much friction or adding more user interactions. (Idea: Perhaps rankings won't be displayed for all until everyone has filled the rankings first)

I agree with both those points, but overall this will be a powerful tool for consensus-building and look forward to using it.

Consensus Meetings

We had two fractally team members in our group, Dan the Man (@dan) and Brandon (@doingitright) who leads the fractally consensus tool product so it was easy to rank them in the top 3. Tommy (@highsteam1900) has done a lot to create collaboration with AW & Bitshares fractals with a bitshares NFT drop. Jordan (@cryptokens) seemed to be an ideas guy and was building a post-consensus tool to survey people's level of consensus that can capture the level of confidence about consensus outcomes so we can improve the process over time. He also shared a Consensus Building Process guide from Consensus Council, Inc. I shared my contributions of summarizing two chapters of More Equal Animals.. I was ranked the lowest again this week and that was fine because I didn't have as much time this week.

Last week I was in a group with Dan (@dan), Thomas (@thomashallgren) another team member, Matt Langston (@mattlangston) who has keeps doing great analytical & statistical modeling work. The tougher decision was between me who writes content & blogs and summarizes More Equal Animals vs. Nuno (@nudimar) who creates social media graphics/memes to convey important ideas about More Equal Animals. I spent around 10hrs but Nuno mentioned he spent far more time. Hence we ranked him above me. We did discuss the idea that since I may not be fully recognized this week I may be able to get catch-up contributions in the future.

Pre-Meeting

The pre-meeting today was a discussion about the process of using the new consensus tool software. Dan further mentioned some ideas about independence and that without independence we would not have freedom. If someone relies on government for food they aren't independent and can be controlled. The reason fractally has its own tokens is to not depend on EOS. He mentioned the challenge of the ETH community and how ETH didn't have full sovereignty because it is dependent on USDT and USDC to decide whether or not to move to the ETH2.0 chain and the Ethereum chain may have to accommodate sanctions and other government regulation. He also reiterated that independence requires responsibility.

BP Discussion

Dan also describe how fractally Block Producers would be less likely to front-run transactions because they'd be evaluated using the subjective consensus process and would be penalized if they misbehaved. Block Producers would earn the same respect tokens as everyone else. Duane (@dphillippi) mentioned the idea of having teams to evaluate BPs using tools to assist in the evaluation process and Dan shared he was excited about what fractally would reveal about developer tools in the future. Dan also mentioned BPs would be bonded and part of the income would be in escrow to give greater assurance that BPs would not misbehave. Technology, combined with human consensus and bonds that can be slashed give layers of protection to the network compared to DPOS.

fractally Legal

Dan has been in conversations with lawyers about how fractally would be treated legally and how judges would interpret fractally Respect tokens and jurisdictional questions such as what jurisdiction does each transaction have if any and what responsibilities will Block Producers have. In light of Tornado Cash and OFAC restrictions of sanctioned transactions it seems incredibly important to be protected legally.

That's it for this update. See you next meeting.

Thank you Jun! Userful review of the meeting. I was not able to attend, so it helped me get some insights.
