Shifting the dead wood

in #football6 years ago

Not too long ago my Mrs convinced me to loosen the purse strings and invest in a couple of new sofas for the living room. After what felt like years of my life we finally found the ideal piece of furniture and the transaction was completed. However, purchasing the new sofa was only the beginning as now came the problem of getting rid of the old ones. I offered them to charity shops and friends alike but I simply couldn't find anyone to take them off my hands. Ultimately, in a bid to rid myself of the unwanted chairs without paying a fee to the local council for their disposal I took an axe to them, chopped them into small pieces, threw them in the back of the car and took them to the local dump.

The log lady! One of Europe's lesser-known super agents

Tottenham Hotspur currently find themselves in a similar predicament with several of their unwanted players needing to be shifted out before they are able to bring in fresh reinforcements. Now unfortunately for Daniel Levy and Poch, it is somewhat frowned upon to chop people up and dump them in a giant bin - although there may be some kind of legal precedence in the case of Vincent Janssen, if you are a solicitor please make yourself known in the comments section.

As such Spurs will need to find unwitting buyers for the following players this year.

Vincent Janssen
Spurs record of signing wastes of space in the centre-forward position is surely 2nd to none. Janssen came into the squad with an impressive goals to game ratio in his native Holland but found the jump up to the EPL a little much. There was a suggestion last month that he may join Vincent Kompany at Anderlecht but that story seems to have evaporated as has interest in the Dutchman full stop. Given Spurs reluctance to sign anyone decent as Harry Kane's understudy and with Fernando Llorente's contract expired it's not entirely out of the question that Janssen will stay - God help us!

Poch tells it as it is

Victor Wanyama
It all started so well for the big Kenyan! I remember a game against Chelsea in his debut season where he was immense, literally carrying the diminutive Eden Hazard around in his pocket all match while regularly shrugging Diego Costa off the ball as if he were an under 14s player. Wanyama struggled with injuries last year and when he did return to the side looked well off the pace of the Premier League. The arrival of Ndombele, the emergence of Harry Winks and the improvement of Moussa Sissoko mean Wanyama is likely to struggle for game time next season. An underlying factor in his reluctance to leave right away maybe his 6 year qualifying period in the UK that would allow him to gain citizenship.

Wanyama was instrumental to Spurs victory in this match

Kieran Trippier
12 months ago Trippier was returning back from a decent World Cup campaign that had been brought about as a result of some good performances for Spurs in 2017/18. A year later and the right-back incurred the wrath of Spurs supporters particularly in regards some of his performances at the back end of last season. Trippier is said to be courting interest from around the continent and Spurs are likely to favour sending him abroad as opposed to another Premier League club unless that club wishes to pay a premium on him.

Shambles

Serge Aurier
Has struggled to really establish himself since moving from PSG a couple of seasons ago. There were some promising signs at the start of 2018/19 as he struck up a good partnership with Sissoko down the right flank but injuries soon put a stop to that. With both first choice right-backs in the shop window, it seems likely that Spurs will give Kyle Walker-Peters a chance this year alongside the young Argentine Juan Foyth. KWP's inclusion in the squad would also benefit Spurs as they look to maintain a sufficient quota of homegrown players.

Foyth is tipped to play a more prominent role for Spurs this year

Josh Onomah
A legend in his own lunchtime! There were reports that Onomah reported for his first day of training with the first-team squad driving an overly flashy car, a move that resulted in Poch castigating him in front of the senior players. He has spent a couple of seasons out on loan at Championship clubs but hasn't really shown enough to suggest that he is off Premier League quality. A Birmingham based newspaper recently ran an article suggesting that Villa (one of the clubs he was loaned to) might be interested in re-signing him.

Marcus Edwards
Edwards has been the next big thing coming through the youth academy for some time. He's represented England at all age levels but there are rumours that the lad's attitude isn't what Poch is looking for and he may, therefore, be willing to hear bids for the young winger. The fact that Spurs were prepared to invest in Jack Clarke, a similar style player with similar experience doesn't suggest that Edwards has much a future at the club.

Who is your club looking to ditch this transfer window?

Sort:

That midfield is missing M dembele. I understand he was old and they got decent money for him at that age but the guy was on another level. Started off poor initially when he came from fulham but poch git his fitness on par and the guy could run a game. Ericsson is obviously off hense they have spent money else they never do. The kids have potential but potential aint good enough the need to be given a full season and then can be judged. The press are always going on about spurs to buyjng players i dont see who we buy as a striker who will come and sit on the bench that we could attract firstly. Llorente does a job and yeah i know Jansen is at best some kind of pro but it could change for him came with huge hype at the time. When was the last time spurs spent top money and it worked out? Maybe keeper and defenders. Lamela? Sissoko? N'koudou?fazio?N'Jie, Holtby,SOLDADO,REBROV lol the list goes on and on

I agree, I would have kept Dembele even if it was just for him to start 20 games a year. United did something similar with Scholes and Giggs

Wait...you think the Spurs need to chop these guys up and get rid of the bodies? Seems a little extreme..... 😜

Haha, you've obviously never watched Vincent Janssen play!

Unfortunately when you sign these guys onto big contracts and it then becomes apparent to them that it's as good it's gonna get money/status wise then they don't tend to want to leave.

Sure spurs should make some big changes...

My uncle is a spurs fan like myself and he comes out with these questions ? Ones like if a tree falls in a woods and noone is around to hear it ..... you get the gist. So when i told him that Utd were interested in Trippier he asked the question . Did Trippier just have a bad season or was he ever any good? I actually paused for thought. Bad season I think. He is still a bomber foing forward, he just made a load of mistakes in important games. Is he the new Kyle Walker. City seem to he getting away with it. Disappointed about Edwards. Jannsen had a great game against the hammers last season. Still dudnt score. Did you see Foyth send Coutiniho for a hotdog in the copa america ?

If Vincent Janssen scores in training for the U-23s and no one is around to see it, does it count as a goal? A philosophical question for him to ponder while he sits in the stands ......

I think Trippier could still play a part at Spurs and yes it was a bad season probably not helped by the injury/fatigue he suffered post World Cup . Ultimately he is a different style of player to Kyle Walker and I think he and the team would benefit from having a Walker type player in the squad that they could rotate him with - Trippier would probably be better against sides who sit deep and allow us to dominate possession, while a real speedster like Walker allows us to play on the break with a higher press. Serge Aurier isn't really an able replacement for either.

I just love Coutinho's reaction after he gets skinned. He knows that hundreds of millions of people are going to watch him be made a prat of :-)

Kind of reminds me of this from Dele Alli - let's hope Foyth can go on to have the kind of break through season that Dele did following that!

In my opinion Trippier is undervalued, he is an outsider with polite feet, most likely it will be a shame to lose him, for others it will be difficult to get rid of

Q.P.R. is crying for Wanyama, Trippier could go to Juventus/Roma or somewhere like that. For rest Spurs need some garbage collector (like Newcastle lol).

What bothers me the most is announced departure of main pole in defence which is Tobby Alderweireld! That will make my worst nightmare come truth as bellow average players like Foyth or Sanchez or even both of them will start every game next season which mean bye bye top 4!

I read the reports that Roma want to sign TA

It doesn't make sense! Apparently, he didn't sign a contract extension with us because he wanted more money - Roma won't pay him more than us! We know that for past dealing over players like Lamela that their top players are on about half what ours are. Very odd!

Quite the introduction mate! Good to see you around here. Regards mate!

Thanks man. Long-time no see :-)

Spurs are cool
