Eight-time German champions Borussia Dortmund have signed 26-year-old Denmark international Thomas Delaney from fellow Bundesliga outfit SV Werder Bremen.
Delaney, who has an American father and a Danish mother, gained Champions League and Europa League experience at FC Copenhagen before moving to Bremen, where he quickly became a key performer in central midfield, last summer. Delaney made 32 league appearances for Bremen (three goals, five assists) last season and, thanks to his robust style of play, played a key part in Werder achieving the fourth-best defensive record in the Bundesliga.
“Borussia Dortmund have always had first-rate experiences with Denmark internationals. Thomas Delaney is a strong player in terms of his physicality and his character, as well as being an excellent fit for our team and for BVB as a whole thanks to his open manner and his fierce will to win. He will enhance our game with his physical presence,” declared Sporting Director Michael Zorc.
Delaney, a 26-time international, today completed the compulsory medical before putting pen to paper on a deal until 30 June 2022. “I’ve actually always wanted to play in the English Premier League at some stage and I’ve had offers too,” he said. “But when Borussia Dortmund came calling, I didn’t have to think twice. For me, BVB are one of the top ten clubs in Europe and one of the top two clubs in Germany – and the stadium is definitely the best in all of Europe! I promise that I will always play with a lot of heart and – with the World Cup just about to begin – I’m already very much looking forward to the sporting challenge at BVB and hopefully to winning one or two titles in Black & Yellow."
