How to make Takoyaki

Takoyaki is a Japanese snack it is a flour based batter. Tako means octopus and yaki means to grill or to fry. In this recipe I used squid since it is always available in the market and I also used our local product because it's inexpensive and not hard to find. I made my own sauce too but you can always use barbecue sauce or sweet and sour sauce for Takoyaki.
You can always play or expirement with this basic recipe. You can add or omit to compliment with your taste.

Ingredients:
1 med sized cabbage, shredded
2 med sized carrots, minced
1 cup spring onions, sliced
1 large squid, cleaned
2 eggs
1/2 kg flour
1/2 tbsp garlic powder
pepper to taste
salt to taste
1 tbsp seasoning
cooking oil
1 liter water

for the Sweet sauce ingredients:

1 small sized onion, minced
2 cloves garlic, minced
230 g banana catsup
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp cooking oil
2 tbsp cornstarch + 1/4 cup water
salt and pepper to tastetakopic.jpg

For toppings:
Mayonnaise
beef floss or (chicken, pork, fish floss)

Procedure:

  1. Boil squid. Season with salt and pepper. Sliced into small pieces and set aside.
  2. In a bowl combine flour, garlic powder, pepper, salt and seasoning.
  3. Add water and egg then mix it well. Set aside
  4. In a separate bowl mix vegetables evenly.
  5. Transfer batter into the squeeze bottle.
  6. Preheat takoyaki pan then drizzle with oil.
  7. Use bamboo skewer or stainless skewer in cooking. When the oil is hot add the vegetables and distibute it evenly into the holes.
  8. Add batter adn do not let it overflow.
  9. Add squid and cook for 3-4 minutes in low med heat.
    10)After 3 minutes try to move it using the skewer.
    11)Then add batter to fill the hole. Drizzle a little amount of oil.
    12)Just continue turning it around and repeat the steps to form a perfect round shape.
    13)Cook until golden brown.

tips: You can add other filling like hotdog, chicken etc.

For the Sweet Sauce:

  1. Saute onions and garlic
  2. Add catsup, sugar, water, salt and pepper then mix
  3. Add cornstarch(dissolved in water)
  4. Stir constantly and cook for 2-3 minutes in low med heat. Set aside.
  5. Serve Takoyaki with the sweet sauce then top with mayonnaise and beef floss.
