Fruits of Mexico: bizarre Morinda Citrifolia also known as the vomit fruit

in #foodphotography7 years ago

I would like to introduce you to another interesting fruit that is found commonly here in Mexico as well as in many other tropical countries all over the world – Morinda Citrifolia.

I purposely used the scientific name of the fruit because it has more than 100 different local names. The most common colloquial names of this fruit include the cheese fruit, the great morinda, noni, the beach mulberry or even the vomit fruit.

Morinda Citrifolia was once native only to Southeast Asia and Australia but it gradually spread to many other tropical locations where it is cultivated and harvested.

Despite its infamous pungent smell and bitter taste, the fruit is eaten as a staple food in some countries. It is also used to make juices, powders and even cosmetic products. Known to have healing properties, some parts of the fruit are also used in traditional medicine in some cultures.

Morinda Citrifolia is a great source of vitamins (most notably A, B and C), iron, potassium, calcium, sodium and other essential substances.

This is also my entry for today´s #foodphotography contest hosted by @juliank and @photocontests. It is a close-up shot of an unripe fruit that I took on a street in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

Now I know the name of this fruit. I used to see it in the bush when I was a kid and been wondering what is the name of it. Cool! Thanks for sharing. Vomit Fruit!

Haha glad you learnt something new :)

I have never heard of this fruit. Is it available in the US

I dont know. Maybe they grow it in Florida.

ok I will have to look. I think I know the name for this as Noni. I am in Florida but I think it grows in South Florida like Homestead and Miami.

Yes, Noni is one of the names of this fruit :) Greetings to Florida! I love this state - have friends in Gainesville and Sarasota.

Have you tried it @phortun? It doesn't exactly sound appealing. 😊

Nope, I think I can live without trying the vomit fruit :D

Scaredy cat! 😁

Někdy to tak bývá. Navenek pěkné, uvnitř hrůza ;-).

Pravda :) Ostatně i u lidí zevnějšek mnohdy klame ;)

Vomit fruit, haha! :D..Have you tasted it?
I remember when I traveled in Asia that there were Durians everywhere! And that it was prohibited to take the fruit into your hostel/hotel room! :D

Nope, I think I can live without trying the vomit fruit :D Oh yeah, durians are infamous! I think I havent seen it here in Central America yet. Maybe it is an Asian thing only :)

So cool! It kind of looks like a giant version of a worm found in Thailand. Did you get a chance to taste it @phortun?

Nope, I think I can live without trying the vomit fruit :D But you are right, it does resemble a worm somehow :D Vomit fruit that looks like a giant worm, ughh!

Looks weird but has a lot of vitamins :)!

Yep, thats what they say :)

Vomit Fruit...Ill have to look out for it! That's and awesome name!

Něco podobného jsem viděl vloni u nás na zahradě. Jen to mělo ještě chlupy, bylo to víc do žluta ( asi to dozrávalo jako banán). Dcera si s tou housenkou hrála .... :D ;-)

In Malaysia we called it "buah mengkudu"
