I Like My Fish RAW!

in #foodphotography7 years ago (edited)

When I was 12 years old I moved to Los Angeles from Latvia. In LA I learned about sushi! I consider Los Angeles - Sushi HEAVEN! I’ve tried sushi in so many countries and I still think in LA they serve it the best, but I still have never been to Japan… I assume they should have even better sushi!

When you consume fish you get anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids (most fish has it), which are great for you! Also, fish provides a great source of lean animal protein, and provides the body with the building blocks required to maintain and repair human tissue. Fish is full of vitamin A , D, Calcium, and Magnesium!

It always surprises me that so many people don’t like raw fish and some people even find it disgusting. How can you not love it? It’s so delicious! I can eat cooked fish too, but I find it not flavorful enough and I just don't like the cooked texture that much. … but I guess to each its own.

A week ago, I was shopping at the grocery store for some fresh salmon and I was inspecting it for about 5 minutes and this woman comes to me saying that she likes steelhead more than salmon, and we started to talk about flavors. I told her that I like steelhead when it is cooked, but when it’s fresh it’s not my favorite one for some reason, even though it taste pretty much like salmon (no idea why!) . That woman was so disgusted and shocked that I eat raw fish! She was like “You eat raw fiiiish?!” … and I’m like “yeah, you know like at sushi restaurants?”. So, apparently she never heard of sushi and never knew that fish can be consumed raw. I told her that there are risks, but freezing the fish might help kill parasites and marinade it in salt is a good idea too if you are not sure that the fish you buy is fresh enough. Also, I told her that I buy only on the day the fish was packed because who knows how many days old is that fish really?!

And here are some examples how I eat it…

When I travel I always try dishes with fresh fish.

Fresh Salmon Tartare served with bread. I got this dish when I was visiting Montreal, Canada.

A dish like that or made of different fish (usually tuna) can be found at many American, Canadian, or French restaurants.

Chirashi Bowl. Fresh fish over bed of rice. I love Japanese food! This is one of my favorite dishes that I get at the restaurant in Spokane, WA.

Sushi! This one I ordered in Los Angeles at Sugar Fish restaurant.

Sashimi! Also from Sugar Fish.

I like rolls too, but lately I've been getting dishes like on the pictures above. Also, sometimes I cook my sushi and rolls at home, but this is something I will leave for another post :)

I am one of those people who cannot stand the sound of raw fish but I also like to try something before i knock it. Raw fish may be in my future....What would you recommend for a first-timer like me? @ella-kay

rainbow roll. this way you can try different type of fish. or something with shrimp tempura inside and some fish on top. If you like sweet stuff you might like something with eel sauce. It really depends what kind of fish you like, fatty or more lean?

Not really into anything fatty so I'll definitely go for lean. Shrimp sounds good too. I just looked up the recipe for rainbow roll. Doesn't sound too bad for a start.

I prefer fatty to be honest like salmon or toro ... for lean fish I would recommend albacore and regular tuna ... if you like sweet stuff, try eel, but it is cooked.

Never heard of albacore but I'll do tuna. To be honest, the thought of eel scares me. Let me start with tuna. I'll let you know how it goes.

eel is like a fish desert .. and its completely cooked. All sushi beginners usually love eel. but, yeah let me know :)

Will do. Thanks :)

but yeah, rainbow roll offers most of the popular fish. this way you can try everything.

I love smoked salmon and marinated sea bass. For me, sushi (rolls or nigiri) is only good with soy sauce, ginger, and wasabi. I can't eat just raw fish like sashimi.

I see. I started with rolls when I was younger, now I barely eat rolls. Mostly just sashimi, but It has to be super fresh and served with nice sauce.

A post about my fav subject ^^ I don't like cooked fish at all for my whole life only some sardine aha, but for 5 years I eat sushi now, and it became one of my fav foods! Especially with salmon (do you think to much raw fish is really bad for you?)

well, there are risks. It is very important to eat it very fresh and eat it with ginger

really I didn't know about that ginger I just googled it seems it is very normal, fun I came on the website from the restaurant where I most of the times eat sushi they say, they have always a plate with ginger on the table but I've never seen it aha.

Fish and seafood have always been my favorite dishes for as long as I remember. When I went to Japan few years ago, my love for seafood only grew thanks to the wonderful sushi collection they have there. Never knew the healthy ingredients behind it... Thanks for sharing those nutrition facts with those super appealing pictures :)

thank you for reading my post! :)
I am thinking to go Japan soon ... I think I won't want to leave lol I love Japanese food!

Yeah, you'll love it there... especially with your passion about seafood... You just need to start picking up some few Japanese words... they don't speak much english over there.

really? thanks for advice!

You're welcome ella :) I look forward to read your coming posts.

Omg you are making so so so hungry and LA-sick. I lived there for 8 years and it was food heaven! Good sushi and Vietnamese pho are really hard to find here in the Kansas City area. None are as good as LA. Beautiful pictures, too! Salmon Sashimi is my favorite!!! jealous, for sure. Mission accomplished, haha. Great post!

yeah, same thing in Spokane. Most sushi restaurants aren't good, and the ones that are okay don't have the same quality fish. thanks for reading :)

Ah I love it raw too. Unfortunately you can't eat it raw in many places in SE Asia. Also i've never made it to LA, but I would love to go. I love Latvia though, beautiful country! :-)

thanks for reading :)

and you should definitely go to LA someday, but prepare to eat a lot! lol food is pretty good there

I totally agree with you. I am also such a fish fan. :)

Perfect shot it is

Mhhhhh.I‘m hungry now!
