Am I Growing The World's Most Red Apples? They Look More Like Meat Than Apples!

in #food7 years ago (edited)

If anyone tells you they can't give up meat to go vegan, just point them to my apples.. (The ones from my.. erm.. tree, silly!).

I planted a couple of young apple trees here 2 years ago and now they are producing their first full sized apples. One of them is this bright red variety called Rosette. I think the description from the orchard is as good as any I can give:

"The light, sweet flavour, with a hint of summer berries is enough to recommend it, but it's the colourful inside that is really special. When you cut one in half, you will see a starburst of clean white and vibrant pink flesh, radiating in fairly regular patterns from the seeds in the centre. Whether you serve it as a simple dessert apple or chopped into a salad, it is sure to win some compliments!"

They are right - these are awesome and taste unique, but the most striking aspect is that they are almost entirely a medium/dark red all the way through to the core!

If I had enough I would juice them and make some amazing drinks here, but unfortunately, there's only 2 apples left on the tree - but maybe next year. :)

Wishing you well,

I think you must be!
I've juiced thousands of apples in my time, mostly from local growers here in Dublin, and I have never seen anything like as red as those. Very strange looking indeed.

I first saw this kind of apple on the local market here on an organic food stall and then when I saw them for sale while looking for apple trees, I figured I would try them out. Even so, I haven't seen them this dark and fully red before. :)

Who would thought as red as that kind of apples exist? It is mouthwatering upon seeing the inside when sliced, me as a fruit lover dreaming to have a bite of it. Hmm looks juicy and yummy.

Wow this looks awesome! I would love to try them. :D
I follow you now and resteemed it.

I intuit that the soil you are growing that tree in is PACKED with minerals. I would even guess that your land is near a source of water (ex. river, lake, etc.) Would you care to share some info on the growing environment of those delicious-looking apples? @transcript-junky

The soil here is very rich, yes and I have also added volcanic rockdust in the past - so that will be having an effect too. There's a river about 200m away, but we are at the top of a hill, so I'm not sure that the river will be having much effect. They are growing in our back garden in the Norfolk region of England, which is a farming area - presumably partially because it has good soil.

Absolutely beautiful. I'll keep this variety in mind for when we plant our orchard.

All the factors, like, weather, must have been great for growing this season. Hopefully it can happen again for you next year and you are ablr to make some awesome juice!

There has been good sunshine and a balance of rain, yes - although some other growers have complained of issues. Apple growing appears to be more complex than I had assumed, but so far it's going well here. :)

I've never seen an apple to the core as yours! I guess I've never had rosette before. I thought those were sliced strawberries for a second! Enjoy!

Hehe - yes! Thanks!

They are so red they actually look more like strawberries. I will bet they are delicious! 🐓🐓

These are amazing! How can I get you to send me some of your seeds ;) I think I need these in my life! =D
Thanks for sharing! I am now on a quest to grow these as well <3

Hehe - I would send you some, but I happen to know that growing apple trees from seeds will not result in the same apples growing on the trees as produced the seeds. Apples are generally highly bred and will revert genetically back to their ancestor's code if grown from seed. The way to get around this is to graft a branch from an existing tree onto a rootstock from another plant.. That's how the tree I am growing was prepared before I received it here. So you can only really buy a tree from a nursery or maybe find someone who already has a tree and take a graft from it if you know how to do that.

I know someone who is in the know ;) So now I would just need to find the apple tree or come visit you and borrow some of yours!

Apples are not very common in Bali, I see lots of imported ones in the stores but only a handful at the markets. I would be interested to see how these would even grow because in my opinion it might not be cold enough to get many of the Western apples I am used to that come in the cool of the fall.

New research project to start I think =D Thanks for sharing and taking time to write this response to me, I sure appreciate it <3

hehe - well, it is possible you could take a graft from my tree when it is a bit more established, but I am in England here and I don't think there's a direct bus from Bali :)

Yes, all apple trees are classified by the geographical zone that they will grow in. The other tree that I am growing here is called 'Bright Future' and I picked it because it is the closest one I can grow in England to the 'Pink Lady' variety that is imported here from warmer areas.

There is a website that lists the genetic heritage of many varieties of apples, but I wasn't able to find it just now. If you can find it then you will be able to see whether Rosette will grown in Bali and also if it can't then you will be able to find similar varieties that will grow there - very useful! I'll be picking some from my bright future tree in the next few weeks, so I'll find out how accurate the advice was from that site - so far they do look quite similar to pink lady. :)

Well, next time I am in England, I will make sure to take you up on that. I am sure customs will just love it ;)

I love the Pink Lady apples, I am interested to hear how this other variety compares (I love their names, I wonder who names all the species!)

I will have to look it up, you bring up a good point that I might be too tropical to get what I am after. Thanks for the tips, I sure do appreciate them :)

Wow those apples really look great (:
I would love to eat that.

What I wouldn't give to bite into one of those right now!
