Before we get into this cake talk first we have to understand something extremely important: CARBS!
Carbohydrates 101
Carbohydrates or carbs for short are all about energy and are found in foods like fruit, vegetables, breads, pasta, and dairy products. Your body uses these foods to make glucose which is your main source of energy. Just like your car needs fuel to make it drive, your body needs glucose to make it move.
Glucose is a type of sugar that can be used right away for energy or stored away to be used later. Carbohydrates provide the body with energy (glucose) it needs and are a good source of many vitamins and minerals. However not all carbs are created equal.
The best carbohydrates are those that contain a lot of fiber (like fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains). High Fiber carbs take longer to break down into glucose and give you the most nutrients along with your calories.
Refined carbohydrates which are sometimes referred to as “bad carbs,” are carbs that have been processed to remove parts of the grain and have sugar added instead. Some of these “bad carbs” are known as: cakes, cookies, and white bread but we will get to that later!
Healthy Carbs
Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables which can add variety, color, and flavor to your meals. Whole grains such as wheat bread, brown rice, and corn tortillas are a great source of healthy carbs.
I would also always recommend looking at the labels and the ingredients list of foods you buy from the store. The item may look healthy but when reading the label you may see that they have added extra sugars and extra unnecessary chemicals too.
Why Women Need Carbs
Low- carb diets may cause irregular menstrual cycles or Amenorrhea (women’s menstrual cycle being absent for 3 or more months). It is recommended for women to incorporate at least 150 grams of healthy carbs a day in your diet to avoid any reproductive diseases. Healthy carbs like whole grains have a high amount of fiber stated before which can help increase your chances of conception. The quick increase of blood sugar from refined carbs can make it more difficult to get pregnant.
Let's Get Back To The Cake!
Fruits and veggies are great and all but they do not satisfy my cravings. I am all about having a balanced lifestyle which incorporates naughty snacks like cookies, cake, and even ice cream. I know I mentioned earlier that cake was considered a refined carb which is terrible for you but DO NOT FRET! This does not mean you can’t eat the healthy alternative that tastes even better than the naughty stuff. Don’t let the word “healthy” steer you away from how delicious this cake actually is!
This low carb Chocolate Almond Flour Cake is made with almond flour which is gluten-free, low-carb, high in fiber, and an amazing source of protein. “What’s not to love about Almond Flour?” I can’t forget to mention that almond flour is also rich in vitamins and minerals such as magnesium, potassium, calcium, and vitamin E. Now I cannot take credit for the creation of this delicious recipe but I can tell you I love it and you should definitely try it like TODAY!
