I decided to get some coffee from Courier Coffee Roasters. They have to be the best roaster in Portland that no one has heard of.
This is a nice coffee from El Salvador, I generally love coffee from this country. El Salvador uses the US dollar as their official currency so I’m sure that makes it easier to export to the US. This coffee is grown in the mountains using organic methods according to the package. The label lists the rain forest alliance so I’m guessing that they have a pact with the forest elves of El Salvador.
Here is the coffee flavor profile:
Rich full mouth feel
Well balanced
Nutty
A touch of floral
A hint of molasses
A touch of tartness (It gets muted with milk)
I used a Kallita pour over style method with a measured out 1:13 coffee to water ratio. Using this method the coffee is a bit cleaner (no grit) than our French press.
I lived in El Salvador for 9 months,
and the crazy thing is that you can't find a decent coffee for sale anywhere in the country except right at the airport in a fancy cloth bag costing a fortune.
All the other coffee was pretty gross.
It's like they send away all the good stuff and the local people get the worst.
Sometimes people mix coffee with other things (corn I think) and serve it so thick that it's terrible, and I was surprised that even the small children drink it for breakfast.
It's a very strange thing, many countries that produce coffee don't drink their own. I usually see instant coffee used. Next time I visit one of these countries I want to share a coffee experience with a farmer so they get an idea of how awesome their coffee is.
