Introducing Trashwiki, the collaborative world wide guide of creating value from trash! Here you will find plenty of trash-related articles: you can search by specific countries and cities to find the best places in your area!

Sharing Food at our Weekly Meet-up!

Every week on Thursdays we meet up in the middle of the city to give away food. It's a great way to meet and help each other. We do it at the same time as the decentralized farmers market that I've initiated which adds even more value! :)

Bro!
You are epic!
and on so many levels!

Hope I get to shake your hand one day B)

Bless.

Thank you! It would be an honour @markwhittam! I believe & hope it will become a reality in the not to distant future! :)

Dude! This rules! So glad you found me on YouTube so now I know about this account. Upvoted, followed, and resteemed.

Thank you @kafkanarchy84, likewise! :)

Wow! I never would have believed that people throw away so much good food. This a an awesome project. You are an inspiration. Upvoted, following and resteemed.

Thank you for the support and encouragement @cecicastor! Yes i'ts hard to believe if you haven't seen it with your own eyes! Much more to come so stay tuned! ;)

THANK YOU for sharing this, we were just talking about the term "Free-gans" at our local shop that we troll before closing for the items that are about to hit the bin, often just costing pennies.

I also know of a community of women who dive for cosmetics and beauty items and tally thousands of dollars worth of product at a time, absolutely crazy what goes to waste. Cosmetics are bad enough, but it especialy hurts me to see living beings' lives going to waste in the bin.

So much awesome some information and lots to unpack here, literally!

Will be checking out trashwiki for sure- cheers! Happy diving!

Hey @dayleeo! More info about Freeganism. I've found so much different things but mainly been focused on food. New shoes, sport equipment, clothes, money etc
Good luck in finding some good spots where you live! :)

My dad used to find money ALL the time, I guess now that I think of it my intro was with him as a kid! We'd stop on the side of the road in front of people's houses before combined trash pickup days- the best thing we ever found was a metal detector haha I had a blast with that thing for years.

Well done @reko this is awesome what you are doing, have some friends who do it and have set up a mobile kitchen/cafe where all the meals are donation based. So great to see it happening in other places. Keep it up, full steem ahead. resteemed.

That sound like a great initiative @trucklife-family! here we have many different initiatives for example oone called "The Resource Kitchen" which saves food and cooks wonderful dishes of it at events for free! FULL STEEEEEEEEEEEEEM AHEAD! :D

upvoted and following now. Great Post! Have always wanted to do this but been stuck trying to find places I can get away with it here in CO i live in the Broomfield area. How would you say to go about finding the lucky places?

Hey @mjhiggs16, appreciate the support! You can just go out and check out places usually it's behind the stores. Also you can check out trashwiki which lists the places in your area (not always up to date).

@reko Man, this is awesome!

It's amazing what people throw away. I've been guilty of letting things go, especially while moving from place to place.

I live in Japan and I've been reading more and more in the news about cash that is being found in the trash by garbage collecters. 2 times this year more than $400,000 was found in garbage.

Often times this is happening is the elderly are dying, cash that was unknown and stashed in the house is left.

Bring awareness on how much food is wasted with our current system!

This reminds me of how people who work in school cafeterias can be fired for giving leftover lunch food for children to take home.

For government reasons, perfectly good food is tossed every day.

Some people 'shop' for perfectly good groceries this way.

While on one hand it's very sad to observe the waste; and, on the other a budget-saver for many.

Peace.

Yup it's a little bit better here with some stores having 50% off on some things but so much more room for improvement, I have a design in mind of a store where the things that are starting to expire are in the end of the store instead of all the candy, built in composting system as well as a restaurant. Example from Japan

the things that are starting to expire are in the end of the store instead of all the candy, built in composting system as well

Great ideas.

Unfortunately, government regulations have people afraid of being sued. Stores would rather toss, and write off the debt.

Thankfully, it's not a total loss, and a benefit for many, especially college kids who find it a welcomed adventure.

Thanks for sharing a post on repurposing, giving and adding minimum to the landfills!

Peace.

True, but hopefully these abusive governments are soon just but a memory! ;) Thank you for the encouragement and support, fuels me to continue on my most important mission! :)

I told you this that night I met you in the discord when you were talking about this mission of yours, but I truly appreciate what you're doing here to combat food waste and help those in need. You are doing very important work!

Thank you @rodeo670! Thank you for the encouragement it really fuels me to take it to new heights going forward and I will! ;)

excelente publicaion, en venezuela es todo lo contrario la escaces , el bachaquerismo y la especulacion no permite que nada se pierda ni se desperdicie. ojala aca en venezuela pudieramos hacer esto

Ty @edinso, I need translation for this one?? :)

excellent publication, in Venezuela is the opposite the scarcity, bachaquerismo and speculation does not allow anything to be lost or wasted. Hopefully here in Venezuela we could do this

Yeah I've heard you have a hard time economically over there. Good for you that you found just the right place to be to fix that problem! :)

Those bananas are sweeter because they are so ripe.

I envy you having blessed with a lot of God's grace of free food. @reko

Cheers!

TY @cryptopie! Yes, they are indeed perfect for eating. If they start to go bad I just just thow em in the freezer and then you have banana ice cream which you can mix with berries vanilla and coconut cream. YUMMIE!! :D

That's amazing @reko You can save a lot of money doing that.
You an also process some to last for seasons.

Yes I also have a drying oven which comes in handy for that! :)

Remarkable. My eldest watches expiry dates very closely, I think her garbage will be a winner!! Especially now that she has qualified as a doctor. When I was a kid I was always exhorted to never waste food, "remember the starving children in Africa", although I dont know how finishing my plate of food is going to help them at all.

Hey @fred703, I had similar upbringing and it's about respecting the food. If we waste less there's more resources to go around.

Do you have concerns about food safety?

Not really @melinda010100 as I have done this for 7 years and never had any problems. Instead of looking a expiry dates I simply use my senses. Number one is smell which works great! But also you can often see if something is bad.

That makes perfect sense to me. I don't worry much about expiration dates, as my kids will be happy to tell you while they are going through my pantry and throwing away perfectly good food. I admire your efforts! I fear we have a whole generation that has bought into wasting food .

Indeed we have but there are a lot working on solving this as we speak... I won't stop before it has changed! :)
