Kashmiri Kahwa

Just got started for my Kashmir Trip and all I can say its a place beyond words and no matter the choice of words I imagine of using It feels short.

My love started with the aromatic aroma and the mesmerizing color of the Kahwa, A tea that involved all of my senses.

Kashmiri Kahwa tea is a fragrant tea infused with delicate flavors of whole spices. Kashmiri kahwa is subtle on your taste and ideal for the times whenever you crave a little warmth and still don’t want the heaviness of classic milk coffee or tea!

Origin

The word Kahwah originated from the Arabic word “qahwah” which means an aromatic beverage. Although the exact origin of Kashmiri Kahwa tea is still unclear, most Kashmiris think that this aromatic spicy traditional drink dates back to the times immemorial and it has been an integral part of their daily consumption for ages. Many sources also trace origins of this drink to Yarkand valley in the Xinjiang Area.

Preparation

The tea is made by boiling green tea leaves with saffron strands, cinnamon bark, cardamom pods and occasionally Kashmiri roses to add a great aroma. Generally, it is served with sugar or honey and crushed nuts, usually almonds or walnuts. Some varieties are made as an herbal infusion only, without the green tea leaves.
