AN UNEXPECTED ROI

in #food7 years ago

This was NOT what I was expecting.

A while ago, we helped an old neighbor with a job that he was doing. The "job" was harvesting a few of his meat goats. For me, it would be a chance to learn a new skill. For him, it would be an opportunity to get some help and speed up the process. If that were all that happened, it would have been time well spent.

HOWEVER...

The plan went well, and we took care of the animals together. I learned a lot on the first two, and he had me do the third one myself. Since he doesn't do anything with the hides, he also gave them to me so I could learn how to tan the hides, which was an added bonus. I thought that this was it. If it had been, it would have still been more than I had hoped for; not only did I get to learn, I also got some hides to tan.

Then, a few weeks later, we received a call. The man told me he needed me to pick up some of the goat meat. He claimed that he needed more freezer space. Now this was unexpected, and a blessing. I'm not one to turn down a giver, so I let the man bless us and came over to pick up the meat. Interestingly enough, we had never tried any goat meat before in our lives, so this would also be a new experience.

When I showed up, I was amazed. If I added all of the meat up, the man was basically giving us a full goat worth of meat. The is incredibly generous for sure. But, we already knew this man to be a generous one, as he had been the one who blessed us with our heifer, trading her to us for just three little piglets. That's the heifer in the photo above.

COOKING THE GOAT MEAT

Some of the goat meat was already ground, so @mama-pepper substituted it for ground beef in a delicious meal we enjoy with brussel sprouts and sweet potatoes. She is always looking up new recipes to try and this was one of the ones that we all had enjoyed.

While it is plenty tasty on its own, we mixed it up a bit by putting it in some corn tortillas and adding some salsa too! This makes one tasty taco for sure. This is one of the meals where you really need to make a lot of it in order to have leftovers! We cooked some more of the meat too, as featured in the cover photo, and that was delicious too.

It is interesting that with as popular as goat meat is around the world, we had never had any yet. It's not just because it is not on the fast food menu, but it is certainly not as popular some places in the USA. Obviously, to receive such tasty meat for free was a huge blessing, and we were very pleased to try out our first goat dinners.

here's the proof:As always, I'm @papa-pepper and

proof-of-meat

bon appetit

That's a blessing! I've only had goat at an Indian restaurant before, and would definitely jump at the chance again. The kids would too--they want to try other things, and just recently had venison, and really liked it. Older two way back when also have had elk, bear, and rabbit.

We just had some venison tonight when I was finishing cutting up a deer I shot.

We were recently given some venison from a family at church...was so good. No gaminess at all.

food is very tasty, I really like cooking @papa-pepper, and I will resteem your post, @papa-pepper please visit my blog.

Hahahahaha. That ''As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:" then the caption says - meat. Lol.

LOL - Glad that you get a kick out of that!

Sometimes, expectations are different from what eventually turns up

I agree! This one came in above and beyond what we expected!

Hi, very nice to see your post! Thanks for you share!

Wow i am impressed ,great post

Interesting. Here in Nigeria we eat goat meat everyday. In fact, the hide you were given is also a special delicacy popularly called 'kpomo' here. You need to visit Nigeria someday - plenty of more delicacies.

That meat looks tasty indeed! Incredible there are people so generous that give away that much food...

I suppose I am used to Venezuela and it’s scarcity lol

Never tried a goat meat before. Just lamb steak only. What is the difference in taste between goat and lamb actually?

He's such a nice neighbour to have.
@papa-pepper is always getting my appetite stimulated with his delicacies pictures hehehe.

I never thought of it that way. I bet in most other countries like you said goat is popular, but I live in the US and I've never had it before. I'm sure many others haven't either, we're most cow and chicken eaters here haha.

Yup, cow, chicken, and pig are mostly what the Americans eat it seems.

very good food @papa-pepper. I really like your cooking @papa-pepper

What is that the year and I will be in the future of our games are based on the year and I will be in the future of our games are based on the phone with me to do it for the year

Good post @ papa-peper ...! but I can not enjoy it, help upvote my blog friends yes.

Goat! I just had a goat biryani today for lunch. And it was amazing. I bet that meat was tasty

Steem on @papa-pepper!

And do let me know if there's any houses for sale next door! I need a good neighbour like that too! :D

You're lucky @papa-pepper not all can have that kind of neighbor.

I love goats meat. We do have lot in here but it looks like different how we cooked it here. Goats so dilicious for me with potatoes, carrots spicy and sauce. Thanks @papa-pepper.

I LOVE LAMP!

That's so cool. I haven't tried goat, but I have tried a lot of other things, so I would be game.

And for all you other newbies out there, I know progress can be slow, but don't let it get your goat! HA ha. Sorry. I'm tired. Have a great night!

It is a real coincidence that you write about goats today. In the Netherlands, goats were in the news last week. We eat more goat cheese but to make goat cheese you need milk, so ' lady goats'. But there are born just as much 'male goats'. So what to do with them? The goat farms make all kind of decisions, not all good I am sorry to say. The paper wrote that it would be a solution to eat more goat flesh. You have to eat goat before the males get a special flavor that is not at all nice, so you have to eat them when there are rather young (said the paper). And today you wrote about eating goat!! It is yet not for sale in our shops but who knows, maybe in the near future.

Food looks delicious. When we lived in Croatia in the village we often ate goat's meat. The goat's meat is very tasty, and the milk is very healthy and good for treating bronchitis. I totally forgot that there is goat meat, I have to look for it here.

One of the best meats i have ever eaten..glad you enjoyed it!!

@papa-pepper I am so glad that you've had a chance to try it! It was such a lovely gesture from your neighbor. In my community it is tradition that if you slaughter a pig or a cow then you would share a bit with your neighbors as a sign of friendship and that you know they will too help you if you ever find yourself in a time of need. Lovely post :)

Who doesn't like a good treat?

This ia totally unrelated to your post but I just came by to say hello. @carrieallen told me about you and I juat came by to make a comment and follow you.

Im just looking for likeminded people who appreciate minnows in the platform and see commenting as a vital process in the platform. I have always admired the idea of reaching out to international communities and Tseemit may be the best platform for that.

I also love your banner haha. Yes! I say no to posting for free. Ever since I found steemit, I have left my life in other social media platform. Im sorry Mark Zuckerberg but you capitalizing on my thoughts in fb has come to an end lol.

Anyways, sorry for my intrusion. Im juat really new here and @carrieallen encouraged me to broaden my horizons and find people who share similiar interests or have same passions. Hope you keep inspiring people throught your great comments. I will work my way to motivate others through myself as well.

Have a great day!

PS. Do you know any discord group I could join? I love talking about psychology, emotional intelligence, swimming, religion, philosophy, nature and my advocacy towards equality. Lol. Hope I find the right people to aurround myself here in steemit.

im sorry but it looks like a turd laying on rice, the tacos look great though
i give it a 5/10

Wow, so delicious...

I am very proud of you, because you can be anything, including cooking a very tasty cuisine like this.
this is a very tasty cuisine my friend @papa-pepper. let alone about the plantation, it's already a job @papa-pepper.

@Hi, very nice to see your post! Thanks for you share!

You can use goat meat in any recipe. It is tasty. My guys like it in a curry. Nice and spicy! What a generous neighbour!

"Proof of meat!" Ha. That was perfect.

Oooo... I like a bit of wild goat. You can buy it here sometimes, but you have to get in quick, otherwise it will all be gone.

It's also nice that you are surrounded by such generous people. Just think about what that is teaching the @little-peppers as they grow.

Just awesome!

We also eat goat meat in our country. There are lovers of it. But I personally have never tried it. But your wife @mama-pepper has cooked everything so delicious that I started to drool from the type of cooked dishes. Bon Appetit, @papa-pepper!

У нас в стране тоже едят козлиное мясо. Есть и любители его. Но я лично еще ни разу не пробовала. Но ваша жена так аппетитно все приготовила, что у меня потекли слюнки от вида приготовленных блюд. Приятного аппетита!

I had Goat Roti in St. John USVI. OH my goodness islanders know how to make amazing goat. I'll definitely be trying to do it myself one day.

Sweet, good neighbor to have! I love how smaller communities tend to be closer knit and help each other out more. I remember during the Ice Storm of 1998 here in MOntreal, neighbors who normally never talk to each other all of a sudden became friends. Some people with generators let people without take hot showers, everyone was helping each other by cleaning fallen branches from yards etc... Nice to know in those times, MOST people are pretty decent human beings
