Red onions to fight cancer?

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Red onions may help fight cancer, according to a study by researchers at the University of Guelph in Canada recently published in the International Food Research International.

The researchers found that this type of vegetables, which is a key presence in the kitchen of the Mediterranean region, rich in strong nutrients that help to eliminate cancer tumors, the most important:

Anthocyanins, which is responsible for giving red onions dark color and researchers believe it prevents the spread of cancerous tumors.
Quercetin, and researchers believe that this compound role in reducing the size of cancer, by absorbing large amounts of iron from cancer cells, which hinders its growth.
Researchers in the study also believe that onion, in general, with all its varieties, even non-red ones, is effective and excellent in eliminating cancer, but red onions may be the best and most effective species.

Onions stimulate the self-death of cancer cells by making the cell environment unpopular and uncomfortable for cell survival, as well as disrupting communication between cancer cells, which will naturally limit the ability of these cells to grow and spread.

For the study, the researchers developed cells from the colon cancer tumor in direct contact with kerystin extracted from five different types of onions, to find that the extract of red onions specifically was the most effective in the fight against these cancer cells.

Previous studies have indicated the effectiveness of onions in the elimination of cancer cells of breast tumors.

But researchers from the UK have expressed concern that these results are still preliminary, especially that the laboratory conditions in which the onion extract from the elimination of cancer tumors differ from what may happen in the human body actually more complex operations.

Human trials are expected to begin soon, and a drug derived from cancer-resistant ingredients may be made from onions if future experiments prove the efficacy of these nutrients in eliminating cancer.
