Mrs Beetroots favourite Meal....A "braai" πŸ—πŸŒ½πŸ€

One of our favourite pass times here in South Africa is gathering around the fire for a "braai". This is one of the most loved traditions practiced and enjoyed by all South Africans,it is a language shared by all cultures.

The word "braaivleis" is Afrikaans for grilled or barbecued meat. The typical braai is done using charcoal or wood and the meat is cooked on an open fire.

In other parts of the world people enjoy a Barbecue, which is hot-dogs, burgers etc prepared on a barbecue grill. A typical braai for us would be chops, sausages and steak braaied on an open fire using a braai stand. This meal is usually enjoyed with salads and rolls.

There are many different names for a Braai...such as 'Shisya Nyama' which is the zulu term and 'chop and dop'...the Afrikaans term. There is also a national braai day which is a public holiday celebration were all South Africans enjoy this special shared heritage. This is a language understood by any race or colour. There is no specific occassion or planned time to have a braai and it is enjoyed at functions, weddings or any excuse for a good time 😎

Below are a few pictures of a typical braai..and this is usually enjoyed around a fire with a glass of wine and a few beers bringing us all together 😊🍹🍻

Hope you enjoyed my post. Please let me know of traditions shared in your country.
