What you need to start cooking Indian foods right away

Indian foods uses a lot of spices. Almost in a level that you will find one new spice in every new recipe.

So lets get started with the spices you must have.

1.Turmeric powder

  1. Coriander powder
  2. Cumin powder and seeds
  3. Chili powder (You can replace with green chilies if you must)
  4. Garam masala
  5. Dried red chilies
  6. Black papers

Also, these are very commonly used ingredients

  1. Garlic

  2. Ginger

  3. Onion

  4. Green chili papers

    Also always make some yogurt (Unflavored and unsweetened) available
    Most common vegetables are

  5. Cauliflower

  6. Cabbage

  7. Potato

  8. Bell papers (Green)

  9. Red Kidney Beans

  10. Most common grains are

  11. Rice (Basmati rice is considered as delicacy)

  12. Dal (Many varities, but you might need mung bean, lentil, toor daal,

  13. Whole wheat flour and normal flour

Traditionaly different kind of oils are used but now a days mostly vegitable oil is used. You will also needghee (Similar to clarified butter) to make some complex and rich dishes.

Now many of the Indian recipes you will find might be too spicy and hot for western taste. So if you are following an Indian recipe then use little less spices (specially red chili powder) than specified.
