I made my first minion cake this weekend. It was fun!
The client contacted me about a month ago and asked for a minion cake for her father's birthday. It had to be gluten free and his favorite flavor combination is chocolate and peanut butter....so guess what kind of cake I made. :) I made the same recipe I used for my own 50th birthday cake this year. It is very moist!
The outside was covered in vanilla buttercream. I tinted one batch with golden yellow and a touch of lemon yellow. The denim color was made with some delphinium blue, royal blue and a touch of black gel food color.

I used my 8" cake pans to make four (two inch tall) layers plus the domed top, which was baked in a metal bowl. After the first two layers of cake, I added a cake board, supported with four bubble straws to distribute the weight of the next three cake layers. A tall cake is wobbly, so I pushed a sharpened bamboo dowel through the centre and right into the foam core board to stabilize it for transporting by car. A little dab of yellow buttercream covered the top of the dowel.
Since it was gluten free, I could taste test this one (the dome trimmed off the cake layers was my treat!) and with peanut butter buttercream icing--oh. my. I love the combination of chocolate and peanut butter too!
I made the goggles with a 50/50 combination of fondant and modelling chocolate. They were allowed to dry for about an hour so they would hold their shape and then sprayed with silver edible food spray. The hands, feet and strap on the goggles were made of modelling chocolate.
To finish the cake, I covered a double layer foam-core board in marbled fondant and trimmed the edge with a denim blue grosgrain ribbon. I cut out a birthday message from a card, taped it to a piece of bamboo skewer and pushed it into the foam core board.
I want to try one using fondant icing someday soon. It was difficult to get straight lines with the buttercream....a skill I need to work on! I am planning to take part in a craft/bake sale next month so I might try a smaller version of this with my marshmallow fondant....stay tuned! I will definitely post pics and the story if it happens.
Super cool! The minion cake looks great!
