One of the favorite foods or snacks around the north coast of Honduras is the baleada, it is nothing more than a flour tortilla folded in half and it is loaded with fried beans and grated cheese.
You can find these baleadas in about any town on or close to the north coast of Honduras with San Pedro Sula and La Ceiba vying for the honor of being the place where it was invented, probably neither one of them is as this was standard fare for people here for at least decades before it became a salable commodity. Now we have just here in La Ceiba dozens of places where you can buy baleadas, but the most famous are the ones that are located along the remains of what was the railroad line going to the old wharf.
This used to be the center of night life in town, here were all the bars, houses of ill repute, eateries, hotels, pool halls, and any other sort of night time entertainment, so it was logical that the baleadas would erupt with great success here, they were easy to eat, cheap and quite filling.
This is the baleada center in La Ceiba
While the simple baleada is just beans and cheese, you can find more varied ones which will probably include meat, avocado, onion, eggs, sausage etc. They are actually quite tasty, and will satisfy your hunger at a very reasonable price.
Had it not for the flour, it could be healthy.
