4 Life Lessons I Learned From Chai (Yes, That Sweet-N-Creamy Tea)

in #food8 years ago

It was 2AM.

Which for a lot of us creative, anarchistic types means I'm just getting started.

Craved coffee. Had none.

Lesson 1: Use what you've got.

Confession time. I only had one ingredient found in chai. I didn't mean to mislead you with the title. It was just a thing of practicality. So, what I did have was:

  • coconut milk
  • cinnamon
  • honey

Kinda like chai, right? With some imagination?

Anyway, I heated those ingredients together in a saucepan. Cut it with a small amount of water. Stirred 'til the cinnamon was completely dissolved.

Lesson 2: Don't fret about what's "missing."

Not only did I not have any of these missing spices that are traditionally used in chai:

  • Cardamom
  • Cloves
  • Peppercorns
  • I also did not have tea! (Shopping soon. Currently focused on YOU and Steemit. Eat later. Write now.)
  • which brings us to...

Lesson 3: Be willing to sometimes have your entire plan changed.

This tea-less "chai" turns out to be all about the COCONUT MILK! (I know. Here we go again with the milk! I have no idea where this pattern is coming from.)

Lesson 4: Learn from the new plan.

Okay, coconut milk wants to get some love. Let's give it some. A few reasons to enjoy coconut milk from time to time include:

  • its high oil content. It is loaded with healthy saturated fat acids, which our brains neeeeeed

  • it is free of lactose, soy, nuts and grains, which is great for folks with allergies and intolerances

  • it is filling AND fat-burning, which is counter-intuitive but...

  • this article goes into deeper detail, and shares even more health benefits of (measured) coconut milk.

Random Thing: While writing this post, I listened to this...

I especially love the tracks that start at 15:30 and 30:00. In a smooth, flowy kinda mood... which is usually the case -- by design.

Hey, what kind of music (if any) do you listen to while doing your digital thing? Also, what's your favorite beverage to drink while on Steemit? Mine is ice cold water, with fresh squeezed lime juice from this tree outside my front door. It's the simple things, y'know?

Yes, a lover of simple things. (But not simple minds. It is entirely too unhealthy -- and unpleasant -- to keep close to fools!) I'm curious about using language as a catalytic + restorative liberation technology. I call it word alchemy, and am experimenting with that here on Steemit. As we all are, I suppose. If you like this sort of oddly flavored thing, add me to your feed: @erikaharris Your time and attention is precious. Thanks for sharing a little of it with me.

Tea can be very instructive. For example, the lesson I learned from drinking boba was "don't do it again".
No offence to anyone who likes it, but who decides to take tea and put black tapioca balls in it? Seriously?
(I should add that I'm also drinking water with lime juice as I write, but mine wasn't fresh on account of limes not growing directly outside the door of my London house. My own fault, I know.)

Well, get your British bum to Acapulco for the fresh squeezed variety, @lensessions! :-)

I've never been too keen to try tapioca pearls in my tea, either. Do the black ones taste like licorice?

Who said British... having tea as I write

Now you just sound like my wife.
And I've tried to bury the memory of boba. All I remember is staring at my cup and thinking "there are black balls in my tea".

The lesson 1 is very important I think. You have to make use of creativity to do you best with things. Very good post @erikaharris

"You have to make use of creativity to do your best with things."<--- Very true, @funnyman... it's all about resourcefulness!

Many thanks for your post! I will follow you and upvoted your work.

I also just published a food article full of Steemians recipes
