Diet is only half of the work. I personally led a bit of a sedentary for a period of 6 months working online as I do. One thing that worked for me was that I had already been exercising before I had that lapse. Cardio is very important. What worked for me is getting a bicycle and riding along the highway every evening sometimes with friends to keep the spirits up. This coupled with a strict diet (no red meat in over two months and no junk food at all.) I also do weight training but that is not very important since I do it to improve my physique.
