Chef Life Magazine Issue #53: Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert

in #food7 years ago (edited)

After almost a month of not writing anything food related, the mag is back! It was basically due to me being busy with the restaurants and I've been cooking food more than I've been eating food 😃

Anywayzzz.... it's been awhile but I've got a good place to review today!

My Dad took us out for dinner yesterday at a shopping mall called MyTown somewhere in Cheras. It was a distance but due to it being Chinese New Year and all the city roads being empty due to the long holiday, we managed to get there in record time not to mention the nice a smooth journey on the usually crowded and jammed city roads.

We ate at a place called 'Hong Kong Sheng Kee Dessert'. It's a place that served Hong Kong cuisine which and they don't only serve desserts as their name suggest. They have really good noodle and rice dishes and here are some of their savoury items that we had for dinner.

1. SK Signature Combination Noodle

盛记招牌面

My Dad ordered their signature dish called 'SK Signature Combination Noodle'. Noodles were superb as advertise and roasted pork (char siew) was extremely rich and delicious. The real highlight though is in the saucer, the fried chilli and garlic oil. Man that went so well with anything you dipped it with.

This would be the dish you order if it was your first time. You can pick this either dry or in soup. Highly recommended!

2. HK Zha Jiang

港式炸酱

This noodle dish is famous in China and this is their own Hong Kong interpretation of it. My Mum ordered this. It's basically minced pork with lotsa fermented bean paste. It was very tasty as well and I'd really recommend this especially for those who likes bean paste. If you don't, then you should stay away from this dish 😃

3. Braised Pork Belly with Mui Choy Rice

梅菜扣肉饭

On to what my wife ordered. This was easily the best thing of the night for me. I wish I ordered it after I had a spoonful of it to taste. Braised pork belly with preserved vegetables on top of perfectly steamed white rice. This is comfort food on steroids... absolutely epic which is no surprise as it was what was recommended as well by the menu.

4. Roast Chicken with Noodles

Finally my dish. It wasn't as good as the rest as the chicken was a little under seasoned but the saving grace was still the springy noodles and the chilli and garlic oil. Those 2 combined together was really the highlight of the night. Seems like the little things tend to always be the delicious things when done right.

5. HK Wanton Soup

港式云吞汤

We also shared a bowl of hot wanton soup. Again..... with the chilli oil... lol 😃

My wife ordered a mango dessert they had but the lighting in the place had so much shadows and had very warm lighting that the picture didn't turn out presentable enough of which I'll leave you with the online pdf menu that they provide here.

My reviewed ratings:

Decor & Ambience ★★★ (nearly impossible lighting for food picture taking)
Food ★★★★
Service ★★★★★

Service here was exceptionally good although the lighting wasn't camera friendly. Price was around RM 15-20 per meal. More details on their online pdf menu I shared earlier. All in all, a good place to try.

Wishing everyone a Happy Chinese New Year. Have great week fellow Steemians!

All the foods look great! This is not the post to look at when it's almost 5pm and you missed lunch. Haha! For me, the first picture is the killer meal. It's a mouth-watering presentation shot at a nice angle. Thanks for sharing.

It was really a great dinner and yeah not the best post to be reading when you're hungry. Haha.

Oh, I would be eating now too!

These all look like some pretty savory dishes. I like how the noodles are used a base for some of the plates.

Looks absolutely divine. Have to say I would have chosen #3 :)

Yep that’ll be my next pick when I go back there again. I took a bite of it. It was absolutely spot on!

Why do I read food description when I'm hungry. That looks so delicious I wouldn't mind some Wanton Soup and pork belly with noodles right now. What is your favourite Malaysian food? I'm in KL and would like to try some traditional dishes. So far I had few and liked pretty much all 😆

Oh come by my burger joint called Big Hug Burger. We accept payment in STEEM / SBD 😄
