Another week and another part of the world where this week, we look at the place that I live in Bulgaria in the eastern part of Europe.
Bulgaria the home of the creation of Yoghurt, excellent cheeses and their Rakia (plum brandy) which can also be made by the grape. The home of honey and walnuts, fine wines and fruits.
This episode we were joined by guest @ravijojla, who took us through some popular dishes that are had in Bulgaria.
Here is the episode.
Ravijojla shared some incredible dishes that are had here and I think from the feedback we all shared in the enjoyment and some even more so that wanted to maybe try a dish or two.
Some of the dishes that were shared courtesy of Bulgaria Travel show a real twist and flair using the most basic of ingredients, turning them into wholesome filling dishes.
Lets take a look at some of these Dishes now shall we?
So in true fashion there are like most parts of the world Appetisers, main courses and deserts.
Bulgaria's signature dish which is very common found in almost every cafe and restaurant is its classic Shopska Salad.
Made with fresh tomatoes, cucumber, Bulgarian cheese and peppers, is eaten in large quantities during the summer months. But commonly Bulgarians will eat this with Rakia a strong brandy that is commonly homemade from fruit and can be very strong so drink it with caution.
Next we look at the Bulgarian Banitsa, a much loved and favoured pastry dish which there is a sweet and a savoury version, this we look at the savoury version which is a mix of a Filo Pastry and cheese again the soft type of cheese much like a feta, yoghurt and eggs. A very wholesome dish that can be eaten cold or hot all year round.
And of course, another favourite is their stuff peppers, which typically can be stuffed with such things as rice and chicken, this is very popular in the autumn when the peppers have been grown in the garden all summer long.
Ravijojla also shared some fantastic main dishes there is one in particular that I am extremely excited about trying. When it comes to main dishes one of the biggest things that I love about here is the amount of meat included in the dishes. When Ravi shared the dish known as Kapama I got very excited at the prospect of this dish which contains, pork, Chicken, veal and sausage with cabbage and rice, sealed and cooked on low for five hours.
If you would like to make this dish you need to access bulgariantravel.or which has a downloadable brochure you follow to make the recipe. Looking to feed the family and fill them, everything in one pot ready for them to eat, I am so tempted to do it today but I have no chicken. Oh well new freezer arrived today time to stock it with more goods to try these dishes with.
Now in between all of this Bulgarians also love their bread and this special bread can be baked any time really but especially for birthdays and christmas where coins are baked within it. But clearly on view this is not just for the eating but perhaps the centre piece on the Bulgarian Christmas Table.
Then of course you can still have your hot meals in the summer time if you wanted something simplistic yet delicous when you can have Bulgarian Meat and Vegetables but don't let the title put you off, remember that as simplistic as these meals are its all about flavour and they do flavour very well.
Now to desert, Bulgarians know how to do a desert cake is a big thing in the country, even myself I can picture now a lovely restaurant I like to go to by the Danube river just for their biscuit cake.
Ravi shared with us the Bulgarian Variation of Strawberries and Cream and in-fact instead Strawberries and Yoghurt (Kiselo-Mliako) which translated to fresh milk, which is sprinkled with a little sugar or even better to be drizzled with some honey to bring out the sweetness of the strawberries.
Thank you to @ravijojla who shared these amazing dishes with us, all links have been provided so the recipes can be found direct, I hope you will consider cooking some and sharing these with us.
In other news.
@dreemsteem joined us to share her competition winner, following her contest she has ran Dreemies Delicous Dare taking three ingredients to prepare and make a dish with a chance of winning 5 SBD.
Loved the concept, taking three ingredients Chicken, Basil and Walnuts to come up with something creative, but sadly this never took off. However....
The winner @juliamulcahy did her own spin on this which if you read the post and watch the jaffa cake advert, one of my all time favourites.
I am glad to say I have convinced @dreemsteem to do another contest and reach out to the Food Community to consider entering.
