My first try at a Mirror Glaze Cake

in #food3 years ago (edited)

I've always seen this type of cakes before online and I was always interested in making them so I thought to myself, why not give it a try :)

(BTW, I am not posting the actual recipe, just my experience in making the cake, but if anyone is interested, feel free to message me)

For this type of cake, there are usually two types of cake base. One is the mousse type I guess where you just make it and put it in a mold and freeze it. The second one is a baked cake where you back a typical cake and freeze it as well.

From what I know, the mousse type or the no bake cake is easier to do since it will come out super smooth because of the mold. But since, I am not a big fan of the no bake cakes, I opted to choose to make a typical sponge cake as the base.

I started out with a typical sponge cake recipe which you can find tons of recipes online just in case you want to try this out for yourself. Then after baking it and letting it cool, you still have to put a layer of frosting in between the layers and around the cake itself. I chose to use the typical cake frosting since my main focus is the glaze. In applying the frosting, make sure to have it as smooth as possible, if needed, you can apply two layers just to make sure that there are no bumps or crumbs showing.

The smoothness will determine the beauty of the glaze later on :)

After putting the frosting in between and on the cake itself. I put it in the freezer to let it freeze for a little while.

It's okay to freeze the cake because you will not be serving it right from the freezer. We just need it super cold before we apply the mirror glaze.

I used condensed milk, white chocolate and gelatin powder as my ingredients and water of course.

I chose to use pink food coloring for my glaze since I had lots of strawberries in the fridge and decided to use them as decorations after.

After freezing the cake, I put it on a tray above a wire rack on top of a cup before I put the glaze. This part you have to be fast and careful, make sure that the glaze evenly coats the cake and the reason I put it on a tray is so that I can save up the excess glaze for future use. :)

This is the end product, it looked okay and tasted great according to my Fam. Just a simple design this time. Definitely can be improved but I am happy with it. Maybe next time I'll try the two tone mirror cake glaze or the even the galaxy type one :)
