My kids love it when I take out the donut maker! It is one of their favorite things to have for breakfast. This is probably what I will prepare for our Christmas morning here in Panama. It is quick, easy, tasty, and at least slightly better for you than the donuts from the donut shop!
This recipe is pretty easy and can be used with any flavor of cake mix. It makes about 36 donuts. You can even frost them afterwards or leave them as is. My kids like them plain and it is a little less messy, so that is usually how we have them. You can cook them in the oven in a donut pan or use a Babycakes donut maker like I do.
Cake Mix Donuts
2 3/4 cups Cake Mix (1 box or bag)
3/4 cup buttermilk (buttermilk substitute: 3/4 cup of milk plus a little less than 1 tablespoon of vinegar and let it sit for about 5 minutes - this is what I always use as I never have buttermilk)
2 eggs
2 Tablespoons melted butter
Mix all the ingredients together.
Cook in the donut maker for one round (until the green light turns on) or at 425 degrees in the oven in your donut pan until golden brown.
We have made donuts with chocolate, strawberry, Funfetti, and white cake mixes. They all taste really good. This last batch, I even froze half of them and they came out wonderful. So these can be made well in advance and frozen until you need them.
Fill up the Babycakes donut maker bottom part until mostly full, close the lid and it will start cooking. Wait for the green light to come on and it should be finished.
They will come out looking like this. You use the little fork thing provided to remove them from the Babycakes and put them on the cooling rack. Then you can sprinkle them with powdered sugar, coat them in frosting, or eat them as is! So yummy!
I can even see some white cake mix colored with green and red food dye for Christmas morning. What a fun surprise for the kids. Just split the mix in half and do one in green and one in red. Sprinkle some Christmas sprinkles on top for an extra treat!
I love my Babycakes donut maker! It is well worth every penny that I spent on it. I highly recommend getting one if you ever have the chance. We use ours all the time to make quick donuts for a snack and breakfast. YUMMY!

Do they taste at all like doughnuts? Or do they mostly taste like cupcakes?
Yeah, they taste like cake, but it's the closest/best option we have for "donuts" here in Panama. Well at least around us. I hear there is a Krispy Kreme 8 hours from us in Panama City. ;)

That's pretty cool, seems pretty straightforward and looks delicious
It's a pretty easy recipe. I even forgot to add an egg last time until the end and it worked out well. :)
My daughter is obsessed with that, muffins and pancakes.
The Babycakes donut maker makes it so easy for you.
( I have to get one of those lol)
You do! :) It makes making donuts pretty easy and they're yummy. Thanks for stopping by! :)
Easy recipe and they look so good now I want to but a donut maker lol 😂
They are yummy and the donut maker is a lot of fun. I had it for years before figuring out how to do something simple like this on it. Now we use it all the time. :)
Now I want to get one I know my stepson will back me up on this
Yes, he should back you up. You need one. ;)
Will be staying with them from Sunday so I will see if we can find one LOL
This is a great recipe and I am saving. I just used cake mix for making cookies. I guess I will be making donuts!
You should! They are tasty! :) You can do a simple frosting with powdered sugar, milk and a little butter all mixed up together. It's yummy too. I usually skip it because my kids don't care one way or the other.
Sounds great! I'm doing it! Thanks so much.
Stop! I am going to be eating so many sweets now that it is the holidays. :( haha j/k Great post. #theunmentionables
They are tasty! You definitely should try it out!!
okay now i want one !
Girl, you need one. ;) You can always borrow mine if you need to as well.
good post
Thanks so much. These are some of your favorites, right? Pancakes tomorrow though!
A doughnut maker! That's really neat! I bet those are yummy. @ironshield
They are tasty! The kids love them and we don't really have a donut option around. So it's kind of a special treat. That's what we need...a family to move to the area who will make donuts for all the gringos here! :)
Does that make them mini Bundt cakes?
I wonder what would happen if you used a Belgian waffle iron. Chocolate syrup and a little ice cream to top it...
Oh man. That sounds tasty! You probably could make them with a waffle iron, syrup and ice cream. I'm all for ice cream on anything! They would be like mini bundt cakes! :)
Yum. Those look delicious.
Thanks for stopping by! They are tasty. I'm just glad I learned this week that they freeze well.
