"The Story"
As a Thai Woman who comes from Isaan, of course I love Som Tum.
Today I was home sick a bit and last week I got some "presents" from my home because my girlfriend came here for holidays.
So I decided to make Som Tum BUT here in Germany a unripe Papaya costs around 10-15€ what is just tooo much. So I normaly replace it with turnip cabbage, what taste really good by the way.
Turnip cabbage wasnt in stock also :D and it was to late to go shopping so I just made it without and added some ants, salted eggs and puffed pork skin as you can see.
I guess many or the most of you reading that wont eat ants at all but maybe theres someone brave enough to try or loves to aet insects and wants to try my recipe.

Woah..where did you get the ants from!! ;)
Beautiful, Som Tum, although I have never had any insects, except for the time I ate a Lotus on a bet in the Marines, but it was not cooked or prepped in any way. I have 10 papaya trees here in my yard in Florida. Mainly because I learned how to make Som Tum from our awesome neighbor. I am from Cuba and we only use green Papaya to make a dessert with a carmelized syrup. She saw our tree and she acted like she won the lottery, she said let me have some of those Green Papaya's and I will give u something to try. My best friend growing up as a kid was from Thailand and I dont ever remember his Mom making Som Tum. Once I tried it I was hooked. I had to order my own Mortar and Pestle for it. It is so refreshing and delicious, its kind of like Ceviche, I get incredible cravings for both.
WoW nice, I would love to be you neighbor also. I guess every thai expat would love to :D
And YES, som tum is a great dish. I guess a love it or hate it one if you make it with the stinky fish sauce. Dont know if you tried already with the original?!
But even with normal fishsauce its tasty enough to be a favourite of mine.
Insects are quite healthy, especially western People dont eat it because of their look, but if you can eat it anyway you can profit a lot. A bit expansive over here in germany but farms comming up nowadays so I hope the price will go down. (No Fat, No Antibiotics, No Gen manipulation, aso.) Defenatly a good thing to integrate in a diet if you ask me :)
btw thanks for the upvote

Yeah I have had it with the stinky fish Sauce too lol, It is not my favorite but it is still pretty good to me.
At least you tried it. I guess its a taste you need to grow up with. My husband didnt like it that much also but he likes Durean for example what many western ppl dont.
I still have never tried Durian or Jack Fruit either. I really curious to see how it tastes to me. A lot of people do not like it and some love it when they try it. I also have noticed here that a lot of Americans do not like the taste of ripe papaya. Many of my friends that try it hate it lol.
I love everything that is smelly. Now I feel like some Bavarian Blue Cheese, have to buy it tomorrow :P
