Someiyoshino cherry blossoms only last about 7 to 10 days from the buds of open flowers until the flowers begin to fall out. The fall of cherry blossoms depends on weather conditions and is often accelerated by heavy rains and strong winds. Some bird species are known to eat the sweet flower part, while the pigeon birds eat the whole part of the flower.
The rare occasion of a picnic rolling under the cherry trees to enjoy the blossoming cherry blossoms is called hanami (ohanami). When doing the hanami is when all the cherry trees that exist in a place the flowers have bloomed all.
In Japan there is a standard for conveying information on the blossoming rate of cherry blossoms, ranging from the opening of flower buds (kaika), blooming 10% of the flower buds in the tree (ichibuzaki) to the whole blossom (mankai). Flowers that fall out immediately replaced with the release of young leaves. The cherry blossom tree that begins to fall and begins to grow 10% young leaves is called ichibu hazakura. Meanwhile, the cherry tree that all the flowers have fallen and only have young leaves called hazakura (sakura leaf).
