You become stronger in the recovery phase after a workout. You workout to break down muscle tissue which forces muscle tissue to adapt to the stress from the workout. It does this by becoming stronger and bigger. To help this process, you need to give you body the fuel it needs to repair itself and go through the adaptation.
When I was in undergrad, there was a study that came out suggesting the best recover drink had the following:
- A 2:1 ration of carbohydrates to protein
- A scoop of amino acids (BCAAs)
Your body can only process 30 g of protein at one time. That is why I like the 60 g of carbs and 30 g of protein right after the workout. You need the carbs as a energy source to process the protein and shuttle it into the muscle. Most protein shakes only have protein with low carbs which is why I like to add some foods to my post workout meal.
Here are a couple sources of carbs to take post workout with your protein
- Fruit (banana)
- one cup of oats
- white rice
- Sports Drink
