When lifting light weights, you must push beyond your last limit per set, so that the muscles fibers can tear. These torn muscle fibers expand and repair during your period of rest.
This is not to say that heavy weigts dont cause the mustle to tear, but light weights couple with higher number of reps and sets gives the best results.
