Fishing Abroad #8 - Barramundi!

The Native Australian Fish

Barramundi, what a fish and what a name… what does it mean exactly? It’s Aboriginal and means ‘big scaled fish’ - so i got told. It can only been found in Australia, in fresh and saltwater. The fish grows up to 1,60m and 60kg. Beside the fact that ‘Barras’ are fantastic food, it’s popularity increases even more due to strong fights and nice jumps, while hooked. Every fish caught bigger than one meter is a trophy. I caught my first Barramundi in Cairns at the esplanade. Not only I couldn't believe it, a guy walked up to me, shook my hand and said ‘that’s the fish every Aussie would like to catch’. I used a live Mullet for Bait and put the break on loose. After I caught the fish, I returned to the backpackers. I filleted the fish and cooked a soup out of the bones, tail and head. I caught a Fingermark the same night and cooked it a few days later in the oven. The Barramundi fed me through the whole week and it couldn't be more tasty!
