DIrty Grandpa (film): Much better than I expected.

in #films6 years ago (edited)

I originally didn't watch this because I haven't really appreciated De Niro comedies in the past. There was also the usual bad press because this movie uses a rather typical plot formation that can be successfully guessed in the first 10 minutes of the movie with a few slight twists.

The story is pretty straightforward. Jason (Zac Efron) is a successful yuppie lawyer who is a bit of a stiff who doesn't know how to have much fun and is instead extremely dedicated to his career and fiance (nothing wrong with that, of course.) At his grandmother's funeral he is approached by his grandfather DIck (De Niro) who asks Jason to drive him to Boca Raton, Florida for some reason I don't remember.

The invitation seems innocent enough because Boca Raton is a retirement area and well De NIro is old. Jason finds out very quickly that his grandfather has kind of lied about his objective in asking him to drive to Florida as he has them drink-driving almost immediately. Dick is very good at talking to people and has him and is grandson talking with young attractive people on their way to Daytona Beach (a party beach, for those of you that don't know it.)

Grandpa gets them involved in a bunch of fun things that Jason is too prudish to participate in but ends up eventually enjoying. Grandpa intentionally drugs Jason at a party and this results in Jason finally letting loose. A bit too loose actually as he ends up stripping down, smoking crack, stealing a motorcycle, and sleeping on the beach.

anyway, the story become predictable from about the first diner encounter on the way to Florida, but that doesn't really matter. I found the movie funny despite its shortcomings and dumb plot twists.

The movie didn't get great reveiws because it follows a very typical storyline formula. No one will ever change this formula because this film made about 70 million dollars. It's a fun movie with lots of laughs. Just don't expect anything amazing or new.

What really surprised me the most about the Dirty Grandpa movie was the bond between Zac Efron and Robert De Niro. They had a great comedic rapport that actually felt genuine, which in turn helped the more insane scenes and helped in retaining some resemblance of realism in the film. The remainung cast were enjoyable as well, especially Aubrey Plaza as the overtly slutty college girl who continuously surprised me with every grotesque statement she made. Oddly enough, De Niro felt right at home here. It is as if his character from the " Meet the Parents" went off and instead decided to go on a spring break road trip with Zac Efron. Zac Efron also proved that he is also a comedic person. Overall, this is not one of the best movies I have seen, but it sure is a hilarious movie thta will make you laugh hard. I wouldn't recommend it to minors tho.

When you hear the title "Dirty Grandpa" you can think something similar to bad grandpa. But actually opposite, an overprotective parent turns into wild old character in a humorous way. To young audiences, it may sound as what they are looking for. But conservative viewers may find it offensive. I laughed my butt out for crying out loud, I personally loved it, not all the jokes are great, but it was pretty good fun at most of the scenes, I would like to rate it slight more than you- 7.5/10

This movie isn't actually that bad; it certainly doesn't deserve so much bad reviews. I went to see it with very, very low expectations and ended up enjoying quite lot more of it.

Actually I also enjoyed most of the jokes & scenes, serious story-seekers are not allowed for this film. Its a great grandpa.

The scene with the teddy bear on the beach was so hard to watch lmao

oh yeah nice movie, sometimes I think that my grandpa will be like Dick Kellym, just a feeling. 👍

Aubrey Plaza was so much funny in this movie, without a doubt my favourite aspect of the film

a very good movie, without a doubt zac efron and robert de niro are from the best hollywood actors

"Dirty Grandpa" has collected in itself the absolute majority of intolerant jokes of different format. He mocks over old age, over youth, over blacks, over gays (over black gays too), over policemen, over doctors, over the institution of marriage and over religious beliefs. He makes it go, dirty, too frank. Occurring on the screen forces you to alternately close your eyes, then your ears, in fact, to stop laughing even for a minute. Why this happens is a mystery. You're right, the film, in general, does not differ in originality: for example, "American Pie" Paul Weitz came out more than fifteen years ago, and then again a bunch of times returned with his wits below the belt. Love intrigue, too, is in no hurry to impress the imagination: tales of student love and abandoned brides at the altar have long been smelling of mothballs.
