Filmmaker's Diary (When there's 4 days left)

23 of June 2017…

Here I am ... with four days left for this music video.

If you’re new to this series here is my last post:

Yesterday in the middle of the editing battle I found myself going to an art show … opening night and all.

Get this: we leave the house… we walk, we take trains and we take metros and we walk again… it takes forever … but eventually we do get there…

We go in… first we can not locate the particular show, since it’s a big place and it's lacking in directions.

But we figure it out, however it’s quite different from the art show openings I’ve been to… It seems like nobody is there, no people giving opinions and no drinks to be found .. and not really that much art either.

So we start to see the show… and well … it was basically a bunch of rocks. I’m not kidding. Showing rocks and minerals...

We saw two tinny sculptures made by the artist who invited us (who we did not find there)… and that was it … rocks… hehehe.

I mean I have nothing against rocks, but I don’t go out of my way to go see them, I don't need to go to a museum to see them if you know what I mean… specially not when the clock is thinking.

So in a nut shell this is what happened:

I’m behind on the music video ( a video that’s been going on for over a year, by the way) I’m in the final days, I just had a bad day where among other things the computer crashed. I go to this art show that I don’t particularly want to go to… It takes a couple hours each way to get there… buying tickets and stuff… I get there and I look at some rocks…

Yeah… could not make this up… Did I mention that I got some new sneakers that are a bit small, so my feet where hurting…

After walking, waiting, train, waiting, metro, waiting, walking, look at some rocks, walking , waiting, train and and taxi, I finally get home around 12 in the evening... by then I’m low on energy… zero to be precise… could not work that evening...

Sleep

The sun went up and a new day was born… Luckily I woke up by 7Am …

This is good news, since I'm behind on the work. But since it was early, I decided to listen to a podcast before getting up, next things I know it’s 11Am… ended up getting my 8 hours … can’t complain.

I get up, get a a small piece of hard bread, coffee and a cigarette and start editing.

With only a few issues here and there (and the fact that it takes an hour to render 20 seconds) today It has been quite ok… been doing some progress and catching up. I will go editing into the end of the night (something I stoped doing when I started this project) and hopefully it will be ok.

My plan now is to focus on the 20% of the work that will bring me 80% of the results.

My goal is to have all the verses and the last chorus completed by the time I go to sleep today.

Tomorrow do the other two chorus. (Probably another all nighter).

Sunday have the all day for polishing and export on Monday.

Not the easiest and most comfortable plan, but I think it can work. I’ll be quite the anti social person until the end of this thought…

Well… the finishing line is getting closer… Wish me luck!

Thanks for reading.

You are one of the best content creators on this site I commend you for standing up to this crap as it's evident you put hours of effort into your work.

Excellent job!

wtf r u saying? your first sentence is positive, yet the second sentence is negative!

Thanks for the compliment. Yes I do put in the hours. Thanks again.

@mpspringer I think @xdark21 means that I'm standing up agains crap he sees in here , by writing something good.

I like rocks!

Well... you should have been there yesterday... loads of them.

Great story :-) I know exactly what you're talking about (regarding the editing) and I've been through countless nightshifts. Heads up and good luck!

Thanks a lot @shortcut !

how long does it take to edit a film like that? very interesting. is there a particular software you recommend?

cheers!

Hey, thanks for the comment.

It's hard to say, since it depends on the complexity and style of the film. This one is taking way too long... it's very effects driven.

On average I would say a month to edit a music video. You also need to take some breaks at some point.

I do recommend Adobe cloud (Premeire por and after effects) They are my favourites. If you have a good computer Da Vinci Resolve is a free and fantastic software. If I was about to start and had a powerful computer I would go with that one. Can not recommend it more, if you have the machine for it.

Another free one is Hit Film, and most computers will handle it. It's good for a free one.

Excellent advice, thank you!

never heard of Da Vinci Resolve, I'll give it a try. Thanks!!

You're welcome. Happy editing.

There is a guy on youtube who has a free course on Da Vinci. HIs name is UglyMcGregor, you might want to check that out.
